This text was not as useful to me as Guerin's text. I am not sure if that is because I was already familiar with Guerin's by the time I was required to read this or because Guerin's was just better.

This is a heart warming and comical look at life after death. It makes you realize that life is really what we make of it.

This is an amazing true story of a Polish man who was captured by the Russians and tortured, then imprisioned for crimes that he didn't commit. Forced to march to Siberia and then work in a forced labor camp for 25 years. He devised a plan to escape and this is his story. This is a astounding tribute to human strength endurance. Two things that amazed me was first the cruelty of the communist regime that was led by Stalin. It is unthinkable how cruel an entire regime can be but must be remembered that the cruel orders were always carried out by individuals. It makes one wonder how one person can by so cruel to another. Half way through the book I mentioned to my husband that instead of continuing to interrogate him and not get the answers that they wanted why didn't they just save time and money and shoot the ones that they thought were traitors, it almost seemed like that would be more humane. Second was the incredible kindness shown to the escapees all during their journey. I can only imagine how they looked smelled and add to that the language barrier and almost all that they came across were more than kind. I definitely recommend this book to all. One last item, sometimes I personally have a hard time reading about the cruel ways that prisoners of war are treated, this book gives enough details so you get a definite idea of the conditions without making extremely difficult to read.

I was checking in this title for the patron and by the cover, I thought/said, "oh, this looks like something I would like! How was it, what did you think?" The patron thought a moment with an odd look on his face and then said, "It was.... Weird." "Weird?" I repeated, enthused, still thinking this sounded like my kind of oddball thing. He hesitated, then said, "Yeah..." in that long, drawn out and hesitating sort of way. So of course I had to give it a go, and I check the back cover and see that my Author-God Neil Gaiman commented on it so now I REALLY must read it. And....? It's...... Weird. I have only tenuously kept reading, all the while unsure and yet strangely captivated. I told myself I've kept reading because I had a hunch about "who-dunnit" and I felt vested to see if I was right. Well, I am, but now I'm reaching the very end, and I must stick around now to see if the ribbon around this odd little package will be neatly tied into a bow, if it will be jumbled into a knot, or left dangling to become another odd story that nibbles at me from time to time. I dare say that if Merricat were real it is very likely she would find this an object worthy of being buried. You'll have to read it for yourself to see what I truly mean by that...

"Very violent, very funny. A comedy with a political edge, which you take gleefully in one gulp." (The Literary Review) Yup.
