Not exactly my cup of tea. I did like the ending but don't believe Nora could stay forever away. She's just too naive and stupid for that.

I love him on the radio. This is the first book of his that I have read and am really enjoying it - true to form. Great point of view and insight. It reminds us of the differences between Hollywood's version of love, and reality. For single people, married, men or women.
I loved the cover of this book: Honey Nut Cheerios in a bowl of milk with Chopsticks. That’s why I picked it up. Also, I was curious about the title; what exactly IS ‘the foremost good fortune? (the author does tell you). I started reading. The story opens in Portland, Maine. Being a Mainer, how could I put the book down after reading THAT? (Well, the answer, of course, is that I couldn’t). You may not be able to either. Susan is married with two young boys. Her husband was drawn to live in China, and she was drawn to live with him. The China decision was deferred for years, but eventually came due when her husband's job required him to work there for two years. What could she do? What I had read about this book in advance was that Susan moved with her family to China and shortly thereafter discovered lumps in her breast, so I was reading pretty far into the book, wondering why there was no talk of this before it is finally mentioned. When it finally is mentioned it is already in progress, anticlimactic almost. After that, the cancer is sort of a backstory. The book itself was very interesting; definitely worth reading. The only criticism that I have is this: there is a lot of talk about all of the nuances, trials, and tribulations of learning to speak Mandarin which I could have done without, but maybe other readers would find interesting.

Such a wonderful story. It takes place in a travelling circus during the depression. Love, fear, danger and an elephant!

I read the first of these before the movie came out and then thought I would wait until I could get the rest at a used bookstore. I am enjoying them quite a bit.

This book was really Awsome!!! It shopwed me a lot about different kinds of snakes. After i read this book i felt ilike i was a snake genious. The book toad you about what the diffferent kinds of snakes did and what they ate. The book showed a lot of Photos about The snakes They Showed! I Could Visualize Everything because of the amazing photos.
This novel is not like Didion's other works. It was her first and, in retrospect, she has dismissed it as sloppy and an artificial past upon which she constructed a narrative about a dying generation of California pioneers. But this book is haunting for its convincing characters, its implications about California, and its unique time sequence. Another interesting piece that no one has yet touched is that in many ways it's a modern retelling of Tennyson's "The Lady of Shallot." I recommend that anyone interested in reading Run River keeps a printed copy of Tennyson's poem nearby. The parallels are unyielding.
