I once read a fantasy review that said, among other things, that when people finish something they like, look around and can't find more by the same author or of the same quality, they'll settle for a cheap imitation because it's better than nothing. The vast warehouse of Holmes pastiches is a vivid illustration of that statement; in absence of new Sherlock Holmes stories, or even a detective that they like as well, people will read some CRAP. Man, there are hundreds of imitation Holmes stories out there, and to my bemusement, there are more every year. For heaven's sake, last year there was a major Hollywood movie AND a new British tv series based on the master detective. No matter how you feel about the liberties taken, that's quite a tribute for a guy who's been dead for nearly a century - if he had ever really existed at all. At any rate, Dr Jekyll and Mr Holmes is a new one to me, although it was published in the 80s. I'd flipped through Estleman's other pastiche, the Sanguinary Count, and didn't care for it. This one's a different kettle of fish. It's by no means a very exciting read, but the tone, the characterization, even the deductions, are pretty in step with the original. I'll happily add it to my shelf, and also look out the other books in the Further Adventures series, only one of which is familiar to me. Because truthfully, I'm no different from any other fanboy/girl; if there's no more of the original to be had, I'll settle for imitation. Although I do draw the line at crap (most recent addition to that list would be The Shadow of Reichenbach Falls).

I watched the movie before I read the book, and part of me suspects that the only reason I continued to enjoy the movie in spite of its differences from the book was just that. It seems easier to forgive Hollywood's rewriting and meddling if the movie's seen first. It's been a while since I've read the book, so I'm a little fuzzy on the details (and the copy I read was lost in one of the many horrible book purgings my dad forced upon the house before we all revolted and moved out on him). At any rate, this book made me fall in love with raptors, reminded me of what happens when man tries to play god, and was all around a right good romp through dinosaurs and excitement.

Ok....It isn't Jane Austen. But every once in a while you need to sit down with some 'brain candy' as my brother so adequately describes it. And that is exactly what this is. Brain Candy. I enjoyed it. Very much. It's the perfect 'go to bed and read an hour before sleep book.' Vampires, mystery, sex, and humor. It only took me about a day or so to read, and I'm going to finish the series. Currently, I am also reading Northanger Abbey on audio CD, and hopefully, by reading a classic at the same time I read the commercial, I will make the book gods happy.

Interesting. Interesting, interesting, interesting. The first half reads like what I basically imagine is every man's fantasy - He meets a beautiful younger (MUCH younger) woman who really understands him, he loves her, and she actually loves him back, he risks (and loses) everything for her, but she loves him, and together they sail happily off into the sunset. I kept flipping back to look at the author photo - "Really? This was written by a woman? REALLY? I need to read her other book(s) so I can get a better idea of how she actually feels about women!" But then, in the second portion of the book that comes twenty years later, it all comes crashing back to earth. Which, I guess should be a relief given my confusion about the first half- but man, it's really sad. I mean, it CRASHES. Plus, it doesn't seem like any of the characters have grown, changed, or learned much at all. I'd still like to read something else by this author. Only months ago, Berta Fernandez would have roused Maria from dead slumber to help with the reeking piles, but now that her girl was earning good money, she let her sleep, shushing her boys if they so much as raised their voices. "Has it ever occurred to you fat-ass losers that it's us with the tits who bring home the cash?"
