I read this book last summer and it is the type of book that draws you into an entirely unfamiliar world. It is about a family in India with a sordid past. It made me analyze certain ideals that I never thought I would question. The writer was in only in her early twenties when she wrote this book!

I actually didn't finish this one, but I feel like I read enough to be satiated. I read the entire final chapter and about 70 pages in, plus Gordon read me excerpts throughout the time that he was reading it. This baby is pretty extreme, but I'm glad I cracked it because it got me thinking about peak oil. it just furthered my local agriculture fervor..

I have not read anything by Anne Tyler in a long time, and I had forgotten how much I like her writing. This is a gentle, funny, story, and when I got to the end I actually said out loud, "it's over?" Short, but complete. Set in Baltimore (a theme in my recent reads, it seems), it was familiar not only for its geography, but for the common, recognizable emotions of the characters, even though the facts of their experiences were removed from the facts of my life. I recommend this when you don't want to undertake a reading "project," but don't want to read fluff that will make you feel like you wasted your time.
