This is not your average WW II book. It is a true story, and recently a movie was made about it. The book is not a light, easy read, as it is more of a documentary. I really came to respect Tuvia because his main objective was to save as many Jews as possible, and even though so many people found it impossible to survive this terrible time, he made it happen for 1200 + Jews. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a reason to recommit to being all you can be.

I had to write a review for this book to explain my rating. After reading the afterword I had to upgrade. I have so much interest in Urdu writers and the time of partition and the fact that Ismat Chughtai was considered a feminist of her time. The first part of the book is like a Pakistani Drama - very slow - but interesting - but lots and lots of details. 2nd part is a bit confusing and the 3rd is just way too fast. However, the afterward explained more about the book and the talent Ismat had and the pacing and magnificence of the book. I do think that lots is lost in translation no matter how good the translation. Idioms and references and pacing can't all come through. I am not knocking the great translation (as I've read Tahira's translations of other Chughtai work) but the fact of always losing something as culture and thought cannot always be translated. The other Chughtai stories I think I liked better because they were short stories and my western sensibility of going fast and at a pace that I could follow (whether slow, fast, etc). This is a very long book and thus my patience suffered. Again though, I wish I could read Urdu and get the real sense of the book because I can understand how great it was for the time and place.

The beginning was slow, but this book is worth the read. It's also a little strange at times, but the story is fantastic. I just loved this book.

The Tamuli has nothing on the Elenium, but I love Sparhawk so much, I still have to re-read these on occasion.

Not sure how relevant these are any more, but the tips were useful back in the day.

This is probably the most poignant book I've ever read, period. I read an excerpt when I was in middle school for some lesson, and just fell in love with the story. Saw the movie the same year but the excerpt was better in my opinion. Got the book that summer and just devoured it. The character of Charlie is so fascinating and wonderful. I love his journey from simple minded yet good hearted man to a vastly intelligent yet extremely arrogant man and back again. But one of my favorite things about him is that when he is returned to his original state at the end, he tries to retain some of the information he learned while intelligent. It shows that his desire and passion to learn hasn't changed. In fact it's grown with the self knowledge that he will probably die soon like Algernon did. He's, in my mind at least, one of the great tragic heroes in the literary world. To watch his eventual deterioration at the end is so heartbreaking. I don't cry easily and I was bawling when this book came to a close. Another thing is his relationship with his Adult School teacher. He has a crush on her when he's simple minded, and she has a soft spot for him. When he grows in intelligence they begin to date of sorts. But his new found arrogance crushes any chance of the two having a real future. And when he returns to his simple minded self I feel like she is sad at how everything has turned out. I also like the flashes of memories back to Charlie's childhood. The flashes show Charlie's history and how his low I.Q affected his family. All in all this is one of my favorite books of all time, and I suggest you read it.

Usually I expect 4 stars from OSC, but sometimes he disappoints. This is a good story, with a little too much swearing and immature boy stuff. It reminded me of The Hourglass Door by Lisa Mangum, and was a world better than Leven Thumps. It's obviously the beginning of a series and I'll probably look forward to reading the next installment.
