Yeah, the film sucked. Really, truly awful stuff. Which is a shame because this is a nearly perfect book -- lyrically written, often humourous, a bit heartbreaking too... one of those books you don't want to end even though it's like 400 pages long...

This was a powerful, disturbing read. I don't know if it was the teacher in me, but I had a difficult time with a 36 year old woman sleeping and having a relationship with a 15 year old boy. However, a friend reminded me that at the time, WW II, especially in Europe, young men were encouraged to "be" with older women. Perhaps not that young and not that old but that information changed my thinking, slightly. This book explores may taboos and as a result makes the reader uncomfortable which in this case is a good thing. It is a lesson in shame and how people allow is to shape their lives for the negative and lesson in the hope and power of reading and how knowledge can change you.

An inexplicable dome drops out of the sky to cut off all access to Chester's Mill, Maine, effectively trapping the people within its borders. The book only spans about a week before everything has fallen apart, which I thought was a bit unbelievable, but this book is already huge. I don't think you could cram much more in there, but it was still a pretty easy read. I finished it in about a week, and enjoyed most of the book. At times I found myself getting lost, because there is a very large cast of characters here, and only the main characters were at all memorable. Trying to keep up with everyone else was frustrating, and I didn't feel like my favorite character (and the hero of the novel), Dale Barbara, aka Barbie, got enough scene time. Instead, we focused a lot of our attention on the big, bad, evil politician, Big Jim Rennie. It's obvious at the outset that this guy's no good, and he proves it once the Dome comes down and he begins to micromanage the town like never before. The ending and the reason behind the Dome were both a little disappointing for me...I guess I was hoping for something a little more believable, to reign in the concept of a giant dome entrapping a small town. Still, this was a good story and well told, although I find that King's later books take a while to build up steam, and this is no exception. Once this book gets rolling though, it's easy to get lost under the Dome.

Stylistically similar to Cloud Atlas but more readable. Both books give us separate stories told in different voices. However, Ghostwritten provides more obvious links between the stories and a spectacular wrap-up. OK, it's gimmmicky. I still really really like David Mitchell.
