Just picked this up and like the story so far. It seems familiar, wonder if I have read it before.

This is one of my touchstone books, one I return to frequently, and always enjoy. Mary Renault is a favorite author, this is probably my favorite book of hers. There is so much here for me to sink my teeth into; Greek history, some great stuff about acting and theatre, the question of what constitutes a good life and a good person, how that can be helped or hindered by art, what one's responsibility is to public life, it's all explored sensitively and intelligently. It's also just a great story; Renault is a master of character and scene setting. Reading her as a kid made me decide I have to see Greece. (Still working on that.)

Another exciting book from Mr. Parker. I really enjoyed this book, but Susan was not the same person she is in later books. Arrgh. In this book, she is tedious and almost vapid. The seesaw between Spenser and Robert was just stupid. She was almost juvenile. Still Hawk and Spenser were fun to read about, and there was loads of action.

I used this book to prep for a teaching demonstration on World War II. Great book, colorful antidotes and really accessible language. But the text is 857 pages long...

This is a most remarkable book. Charles Mann, the author, presents the reader with some of the latest research regarding pre-Columbian civilizations. Because of my under-graduate degree in anthropology, I have probably been exposed to more pre-contact archaeology, history, and religion of the Americas than the average American so I did not expect to be wooed by the book. Rather, my intention was to review the information that I have been steadily forgetting since college. Pleasantly surprised, the author brought to light the genetic, ethnic, historic, religio-mythic, agricultural, and politic realities of the many civilizations pre-dating European contact and the strange confluence of events that led to their downfalls. The lion's share of this information comes from the past decade, as archeaology and genetic research continues to march on. Most fascinating is the author's ability to challenge conventional wisdom regarding the New England coast at the time of the Puritan arrival, the myth of Edenic Amazonia, and the outbreak populations of Bison, elk, and passenger pigeons resulting from massive native die-outs resulting from European disease transmission. What is more, Mann is a superb writer; he employs an extensive vocabulary chock full of clever turns of phrase and double-entendre that flows smoothly for expository text. At the close of the book I discovered that Mann has written a follow-up book titled, "1493" in which he chronicles the dramatic changes that transpired after the merging of the Old and New Worlds. Though I was dismayed that 1491 came to an end, I am animated knowing that there is another, follow-up to the one I just read!

This is such an intense series that you may have to keep reminding yourself that it is indeed fiction. Spy, assassin, and art restorer Gabriel Allon has retired to Cornwall instead of yielding to pressure to become head of Israeli intelligence. However, when an art restorer friend is killed and the Rembrandt painting he was working on stolen, Gabriel cannot resist investigating the crime. Of course, the plot is infinitely more complicated than just a stolen painting, and eventually he gets the backing of several governments and reassembles his old team. Silva has always been rather vehement about the complicity of the Swiss in the plundering of holocaust victims and this book pursues the theme with a vengeance. Much better than the last entry in the series.
I bought my tattered, 1965 edition of this dictionary in Oxford, but I doubt the language has changed much since this was first published. During my senior year, back when I was translating Ragnars Saga Loðbrokar, this was my constant companion.

Again, He doesn't dissapoint in his huge narrative of many families enduring the same hard times, but in different countries. Love Ken Follett.

Too much blow-by-blow rugby in this one, for my taste, and not enough character development. I didn't really care about any of the people involved.
