A childhood favorite which was even wackier than I remember it being. The plot is all over the place and takes the characters into outer space to fight an alien race intent on eating humans, back to the chocolate factory, and into Minusland. A fun romp, though not as good as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because of the randomness of the plot. The humor was also much punnier, which is not something I enjoy, and it outdated itself with some racial slurs in the beginning that would have been fine in the 70s when the book was written, but make readers cringe now. Interesting commentary on politics, though.

I read this book because of the movie which I haven't seen yet. I was curious as it was a love story. However, the story is so much more than one about love. If you love stories about love & post-holocaust events read it. It didn't move me the way I thought it would, but instead left me feeling everything and nothing all at the same time, very much like the main character.

Summary: Wayne Weible was a happy protestant, oblivious to what all the hype was about the Blessed Virgin, until a friend came to speak at his Church. He was called to go to Medjugorje and to spread her message. He wrote a few small articles for a local free newspaper and had such overwhelming response that he realized he was meant to dedicate his life to spreading Our Lady's Message at Medjugorje, though his book and speaking. Review: This book was a well-written, journalistic account, of the apparitions at Medjugorje. The book walked the line between a newspaper article and a personal memoir of one man's journey to love of the Blessed Virgin.

Summary: Unknown Review: I got about 75 pages into the book and couldn't take it anymore. The writing wasn't terrible, but it was a little bit too descriptive for my taste as far as human remains go, so I had to put it aside. Sorry, Kathy, I love Bones, but Tempe was just too much for me in this one.

This is one of those enduring classics from childhood that I re-read from time to time. The Wallace family, while far from typical, are made up of very familiar personalities. I love Meg and her awkward earnestness, Charles Wallace and his intelligence coupled with barely being out of diapers, and the O'Keefes. How on earth did they manage to spawn such a great kid as Calvin? And the whiches are hysterical. This epic adventure of rescuing two parents, one from heartbreak, one from danger, on a journey of self-discovery is one I'll never stop re-reading. Luckily, I passed it along to one of my children and re-read it again recently. If you read it in childhood, read it again. If you didn't, you missed a good one, read it now!
I picked up this book because I wanted to read McLaren's (currently) latest book: A New Kind of Christianity. I figured that New Christian would be a good preface to it. It turns out that New Kind of Christian is actually the first of a three book series. (?) So I'm still postponing New Christianity until I read a few more books. This is one of McLaren's earliest books, and so I am interested in watching how his thoughts develop over time. Now that it has been out for almost 10 years, I don't know many people who would say that this particular book contains anything very controversial. Perhaps it may have been more egregious when it first came out, and perhaps some of his more recent works may be less tolerable to some, but this book seemed pretty open and innocent at the time. Maybe that just comes from hanging around a less conservative crowd than I used to. I rated the book a 5, which in my rating system means that I really encourage other readers to go through this book. The 5 rating is definitely not for the quality of writing, but for the substance of ideas. (The author stated in a forward that he did not care to strive for the highest standards of fiction, and it shows.) The book did not strike me with anything particular new to me, but rather re-clarified and organized some of the thoughts and transitions I have been experiencing over the past several years. I think it does a good job giving a vision to where Christianity may be headed over the next few decades. Even for Christians who disagree with McLaren's thoughts, it would be a good and hopefully informing, unoffensive read.

** spoiler alert ** I finished this book a couple of days ago and I still haven't accepted what happened to Emma. I just can't believe it but I get the message. Don't waste time and just go for it because you never know what's around the corner.
I had this book for a long time & was reluctant to read it because I knew it was a sad tale. So glad I've finally read it. It gives me a new appreciation for those who have suffered through severe poverty & yet have been able to do with great grace, humor & insight. Never give up! Immediately started reading the sequel to it because I wanted to know how the next phase of Frank McCourt's life turned out.

This book is excellent - it really shows me that I have a few things that I definitely need Gods help on. Humility being the first and the ability to forgive. Great book and I highly recommend.
