It was an interesting read. Far more than I expected. But in a good way. The world conjured around the main characters was harsh and unyielding and it was easy to imagine it as a possible future to a world-wide epidemic virus, wiping out not only billions of people but customs and beliefs as well. Ocotillo pretty much summed up with "The whole world had a brand that would never heal, not in any time frame that had relevance. The morals of the After were what they were, and it didn't matter if Tesla fought them, they remained the Word" There was a sliver ray of hope but for the most part, people were driven by fear in out-casting the differences and preserving a set of rules that bound the rest. Both Tesla and Coyo were fascinating characters, so well portrayed and with a very insightful streak. Each having survived a harsh rite of passage into adulthood, each bearing their scars (physical or not). Tesla seemed like the forever hopeful. Despite bounds of depression and sour reality, he held on to the dream of finding a home and someone to love. And in that, helped Coyo too overcome his imposed solitude and take a chance at happiness. Coyo was for the first part of the story, the loyal guard, finally awakening to the world outside his duties. He fought his inner battle against set in routine and beliefs and realised what was really worth fighting for. It was an emotional ride as well as an adrenaline packed one. Set against a possible future, the path of these two lonely men crossed and they found happiness at the end of heir journey. A very nice read indeed!

I don't have this book anymore and it is one that I miss while looking at my library. For the past three or four years I have been obsessed with the film and its history. There is a good critique out by James Naremore, but also recommended is the fantastic Criterion edition of "Sweet Smell of Success." The DVD comes with a small book that has two short stories by Ernest Lehman that are the first appearance of the main characters in Sweet Smell of Success, that is really fascinating. Get it!

I'm trying to remember the exact details of this one. I actually really liked it. The only thing you have to think about while reading The Mephisto Covenant is to suspend your disbelief. I know I'm already saying this to people who read YA and already know how to suspend their disbelief, because you do it every time you pick up a book. There are just some parts in this one where I had to tell myself to just go with the flow. The entire beginning is an example of that. Throughout the entire novel, Sasha is questioning most everything that's going on. She wants to understand. But in the very beginning, when Ajax (AKA Jax) shows up to save her from the Eryx puppets, she doesn't really wonder how he froze time or who they are and why they act like she's some kind of goddess. Nothing, not even a hint of suspicion. She's curious, but not suspicious. And that, to me, is suspicious... You can check out the rest of this review and many others on my blog, The Reader's Antidote

An amazingly written biography of Elizabeth I, chronicling in great detail her ability to manipulate and control those who would have taken power away from her. I loved how often when people thought that they had pulled the wool over her eyes, she would retort or respond at just the right moment to reveal to all there how on top of things she was. It's a slow read, but well worth it.

Wonderful! I hope there will be more books in future about these characters. I plan to read "Zoe's World" soon. * * * I really like the idea of Mennonites as colonists and with their internal structure, work ethic, and practical skills they would be ideal. It is obvious that Scalzi is familiar with Anabaptist beliefs and practices and his respect is obvious. I loved the way that religious pacifism was shown in action to the point of martyrdom by one of the characters. I am so tired of reading books with simplistic evil crazy religious fanatics as villains. This was a very nice change!
I read half of this book but got too bogged down in the minute details of Iranian politics and culture.
