Comparing this to "The End of the Affair" makes me wonder if Greene made all sorts of conscious decisions about what kinds of books to write beyond that of novels vs. entertainments, for instance, literature composed predominantly of daring writing and arresting phrases vs. serious books almost entirely bereft of any interesting words or sentences at all. This one is one of the former, and pwns "The End of the Affair" into a cocked hat. The scene in which the Police Chief, the beggar and the Governor's cousin drink the wine is particularly great, but the book is pretty much one terrific scene after another up through Part Three, which I either find dissatisfying because it loses its urgency or else just read too fitfully in too many different sittings during a weekend in which I had too many drinks. I don't know if it coughed it up, or I did. Still, this is my favorite Greene so far, by far.
Important but boring, as I recall.

Straight forward advice on breaking the code...is he or isn't he?

I was a bit disappointed in this book. Maybe because I picked it up under the advice of my 10 year-old's teacher as a book for him to read. I always meant to read it, so I picked up two copies so we could read it together. Yeah. He's not reading it any time soon. I think it contains too mature content for a 10 year old. Especieally mine. There was cussing in it, which was my first objection. My second was the tendency toward violence exhibited by the children...young children. I had expected more of an author who should be "seeking things of good report or praiseworthy" if you know what I mean. I mean, if you are seeking those things, shouldn't you aim to put them forth? My beef.

Truly, I didn't think it was possible that a book would ever have too much scatological humor for me to enjoy. But I just couldn't get into my first TC Boyle read. Maybe if I'd been emotionally engaged in either loving or hating the characters getting enemas? But nothing compelled me to read past page 100. And my friends, there are too many books and too little time to spend reading something that doesn't move you in one way or another.

This is why I avoid the bestseller lists. I started this book and knew after the first chapter what it was about. I kept reading, though, thinking, "Surely, there's more to this than what I think." Well, there wasn't. Not a memorable book.

** spoiler alert ** I couldn't put this book down it was very easy to be drawn into the book and I liked that. This was also my first trip into the romance genre and it was a good book to be introduced too. There was a solid plot too. The constant complaining of Ruth's age and Garrick's one ball got a bit annoying as it became more constant but I can understand in that type of nature and with Ruth's job why her age would be of concern. I loved the physical details of the electricity running through each of them as they got closer and the constant of their eyes as well. The murder plot with them trying to frame Garrick was really rushed. But I can see how through out the novel, after I was done reading it, that there was a lot of stuff dealing with it through out the book. But I think more of it through the book would've been better. I had just happened to look at the back of the book when in school and was surprised to see "and he's being framed for murder" which didn't come in until the last 50 or so pages. I was happy with the resolution of the book and how they were able to get their happy ending and Ruth was able to conceive. Which I don't see why she wouldn't, she just kept saying she was too old not that her cycle was missing. But I'm being to critical, I highly enjoyed this book and might delve into romance more often.

This was a fantastic piece of thought provoking science-fiction. I loved the story and the characters, both the good and bad. Even as I saw things coming I was grateful they were there and the ending was perfect. Great story.

I LOVED "The Pact"! I thought it was one of those wonderful books that truly makes you think about life and what decisions you would make if you were put into the same situations as the main characters. Wonderful!
