This is a funny story with a strong, clever female protagonist that all my feminist friends are sure to love and to want to read their own strong girls and boys.

As soon as I read the Tolkien estate was trying to stop publication of this, I knew as a Tolkienite I had to read it. It might be bad, it might be great... we shall see.

Stephen King says: "A great American novel about...Cleveland? Yes, children, this is the real deal — by the man who has revived Mario Puzo's Godfather characters with such wit and élan."

Nickel and Dimed was an eye-opening book. Not only had I never really given much thought to the working poor in America, but I never knew that many people living in poverty have one or even two full-times. The fact that working a full-time job is still not enough to support a person is heinous. This book was informative but also witty, which kept me reading and kept me learning. All in all, I'd say Nickel and Dimed is a very worthwhile book to read, if for nothing but just to gain a little perspective into how the other, poorer, half lives.

I was okay with this inquisitive writing until page 187 of my trade paperback, when MacLaine reports on her re-creation myth, akin to spiritual science fantasy. But I do like her curiosity and acceptance of flexible time and memories and purpose. And appreciate how her celebrity status added to her pilgrimage challenge.
easy, but fun read (& series)

Really liked the whole concept of the book. Lovely.
Say what you want about this book. Overdone, overblown, overly dramatic. Yes. He drops anvils like Wylde E. Coyote. He's about as subtle as my dog when he needs to pee. Yes. But I love this book anyway. I just adore it, and you can't talk me out of it! It is my favorite Dickens novel. All of the aforementioned may be completely true, but I think that with the subject and time period that Dickens is dealing with, he can get away with it. Was there anything subtle or restrained about the Terror? I'm going to go with no. People during that time, at least according to my reading, felt the hand of 'destiny' and 'fate' and other grand things around them. I think it evokes the overall spirit of the era to perfection. This is sensationalism, done right. If you're going to read only one Dickens novel, please skip over Great Expectations and try this one instead. It's the better choice.

This would get two and a half stars. I must admit surprise at it having been named a Newbery Honor book in its year, considering that Betsy Byars's "The House of Wings" was also in the same Newbery class and didn't receive a Medal, but Frog and Toad Together does have a lot of positive merit. Arnold Lobel's skills as illustrator are comfortingly familiar and well shown here, but in my mind what really gives this book its power is the last short story. There is a lot of wisdom and feeling in that final narrative. Frog and Toad Together is a fine work, one of the best picture stories available.
