Great book for the beach when you don't want to strain your brain delving into the meaning of life or your own psyche. The characters are so likeable, especially the best friend. It kind of made me wish I had best friend her. Over all, a fun read. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Richard J. Evans’ In Defence of History is an attack on the influence of postmodernism on the practice of history. What makes it interesting is that in this case the attack is coming from the Left. What makes it even more interesting is that Evans is not even particularly hostile to postmodernism. His argument is that although postmodernism can offer the historian some useful insights and techniques there is a very real danger of throwing away the baby with the bath water. If historians abandon the time-honoured techniques of placing their reliance on primary sources and the belief that history is about something real, that the past can be (at least partially) recovered, then they will be left with nothing. Taken to excess, postmodernist history can end up being not merely nothing but a mix subjectivity and wishful thinking, it can also open the door to some very serious dangers indeed. By rejecting the idea of objective truth postmodernism opens tremendous opportunities for extremists such as Holocaust deniers. If history can become whatever your own political leanings and subjective feelings want it to be there is no longer any valid reason for opposing the works of people like David Irving. The most horrifying example he gives is a feminist history of witchcraft that treats all sources, including explicitly fictional sources, as being equally valid. His criticism in this case is especially telling since Evans himself is extremely pro-feminist. When it was published several years ago it attracted a predictable firestorm of criticism in spite of the fact that Evans goes to extraordinary lengths to moderate his attacks on postmodernism. It seems that postmodernists believe that all texts should be regarded with scepticism, apart from their own! A highly stimulating book, recommended for anyone who is unconvinced by the Brave New world of postmodernism.

Nikki is going to a society wedding that her friend Isabel agreed to cater and this Isabel fourn out that the groom is her boyfriend of the last several months. The bride is a bridezilla to the umpppp degree and Isabel can't get out of the contract though Nikki and her brother urge her to do it. After the wedding ceremony the bride goes up to change and orders Isabel to have a glass of champaigne brought to her. Nikki to take the pressure off of Isabel, takes the glass of wine up to the bridezilla to find her dead on the floor. And that's where the fun really starts.

A rule book for LARPing. I used to play this when I was younger, and a friend of mine wanted to start up a game so I thought I would familiarize myself with the "official" rules. Only a good read if you are interested in LARPing; otherwise a waste of time. It had a lot of creative suggestions for killing someone, so I hope a game is forthcoming...

Another enjoyable book from Bill Bryson. This is packed with interesting historical info about the structure and decor of the typical American and British home. Not a laugh out loud book like some of his earlier works but still worth reading on a rainy winter's night by the fireplace. I'd recommend it if you love Bryson's books.

Don't waste your time with this one. An exasperating example of the fallacy of imitative form, this book had so many potentially interesting ways it could have gone (transgendered protagonist who idolizes his father, a blind dreamer and romantic; a high-achieving but completely dysfunctional immigrant mother; a parallel storyline about a half-Mexican poet/socialite; an inscrutable girlfriend; the 90s East Village scene), and ended up going nowhere. The fact that that was probably the point just made me wanna get my $15 back even more. It gets two stars only because of the picture on the cover.
