First book I ever read in English! It was a long, boring summer but I must say it was also a very productive one, and my English improved soooo much! Loved the book, it was witty, it was funny and it was creative,will definitely read it again whenever I get the chance to.

I liked this book, but there were many times that the author leaped to the next part in the story and she did a poor job transitioning to the next scene. To me, this is bad form and the reason I can't give the book five stars. The story itself is wonderful and I love Katsa's strength, although I would have liked to know more about her background rather than just jumping into her life. The part where Po is injured is where I was hooked - I won't spoil it - but I spent a lot of time worrying about him. The resolution of this seemed pointless and hurried, however, and I don't know how it relates to his Grace, and Cashore didn't really leave a spot to jump to a second novel, so I guess the matter is closed. Read it for yourself. The story is good, just don't look too deeply.

This book chronicles the Kingsolver family quest to eat only locally for an entire year. With contributions from Stephen Hopp (husband) and Camille Kingsolver (daughter) the book is a combination of narrative, recipes, informative sidebars, etc. Though the story of how a family would truly eat locally for a year (i.e., no fruit in the winter for this Appalachian family) is rather interesting, and though my knowledge of edible vegetables quadrupled, at times the prose seemed a bit “preachy”. Kingsolver is obviously passionate about the importance of eating locally, of the abuses engendered by large meat farms or agricultural conglomerates, etc,, and this book inspired me to try and eat more foods grown closer to home. However, I won’t be raising and butchering my own turkeys, nor am I ready to begin making my own cheese. I WILL be more aware of where my food comes from. Thanks to having read this book, I am now obligated to add to my collection of guilty crimes that of eating a banana shipped all the way from Central America (sigh…).

I found this entertaining in a Sherlock Holmes/Jack the Ripper kind of way. Lots of red herrings.
