I had this book for 3 years and tried reading it 4 times. I finally succeeded on my continuous 4-day long journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Starts slow but once u get past chapter 4 or 5 it gets quite good. Typical "colonial" themes (you'll realise after reading a few more of these books) but not bad read in general.

I ADORE this book. Love it! The thoughts that Orwell put into this novel are truly wonderful. The main character of Winston is probably my top five favorite lit. characters. This is one of those books I don't think anyones live is complete without reading! If you can see the play done well, I also highly suggest it, it is different, but a very good different. And really scary!

i like bill bryson and i liked this more than the book about small towns but sometimes i find him rather close minded and rude..and there were bits in this that i found him that way. i thought the lament of downtowns and mom and pop stores not only typical of him but true and disappointing.
