A book celebrating its 50 year in print. The Crooked River Ranch book club I belong to chose to review it. It was fun to re-read the book in 2010 thinking about the big changes alone with some sameness of society over racial tensions.

does it get better? because i'm about to put it down. it seems like a diatribe of an egocentric woman out to prove that she was the only competent person in a sea full of well-hung, beautiful emotionally stunted idiot-savants, or a forum for the laundry-list of lovers that show how open-minded and progressive she actually thought she was. I'm missing the compelling story here... (that being said, i'm going to keep reading). Update: didn't finish it.

Hilarious and smart at first, but it kind of droned on and was hard to finish. It was like the author couldn't bring himself to take out any of the funny parts in the beginning but then remembered that he had to finish the story. So the last, probably 1/5th to 1/4th of the book left a lot to be desired after the big buildup.

The premise of this book is great-- beauty queens' plane crashes on a "deserted" island. There is a lot of really great humor making fun of pop-cultural tropes, generally in footnote form, which is awesome. I read the book in two sittings, probably only took me a few hours to get through the whole thing. That said, I had a few problems with the message of the book. I felt like Libba Bray was attacking society when none of the girls' problems, with the possible exception of race, was something forced upon them by society; they were all completely internal things. Thus why I tagged this as dystopia, because the world doesn't actually treat girls the way it does in the book, or at least I'll say I've never felt the pressures the characters feel is an inherent part of femininity. So in that way, it didn't really mirror life and I just couldn't relate to how they felt, at all. This is maybe a slight spoiler. I also wished that at least one of the girls really had just enjoyed doing pageants and not really had more to her than that. Not every girl is some kind of deep thoughtful socially conscious genius underneath, and I feel that Bray wasn't really fair in assuming that every girl who does pageants has some sympathetic backstory and could be different if only society would let her. Ultimately, for its readability (and humor) the book gets four stars. But I did get pretty annoyed at some of the heavy-handed stuff she was saying because it makes her seem like a relic. In addition to that, I feel like while this book is marketed YA, it isn't necessarily teen YA. A lot of the references are to things I don't think teens would get; the humor seemed more geared to someone around my age (mid-20s).
