Absolutely stellar! Suspense, drama, and a creatively designed distopic world! I picked this book up on the suggestion of a friend and I cannot thank her enough! This book was absolutely stellar! There s suspense, drama, and a creatively designed dystopic world! The characters have depth and are very engaging as they race around an arena trying to kill each other! Before getting ahead of ourselves, some back ground information is necessary. When global warming destroys the United States, the remaining land is divided up between 13 districts. When District 13 decides to fight back at the inordinate amount of control the central government is exerting, they are put down and destroyed. As a reminder of this ill-advised uprising, every year there is a nationally televised gladiator-esque game show pitting two contestants from each district against everyone else in a battle to the death. Katniss, our 16 year-old volunteer, is a strong, determined heroine. If she can be called that. Her drive to return home forces her to be brutal and harsh, while she is still likable as a character. Her alter-ego Peeta, also from her district, is generous to a fault. The story follows them as they try to escape the other 22 players and learn of the evil that lurks in the government. Do they make it out? Read it and discover the truth!

this was a fun read, with interesting characters and settings. the only bad thing was that i guessed the end about a fifth of the way thorugh and for some reason was compelled to finish anyway. i really shouldn't have, as reading the end only confirmed ballard's lack of ingenuity. boo.

I both look forward to and dread the day my boys will be old enough to read this.

Great for teaching teamwork. Tells the story of a wizard, a fairy, and a magic chicken who always try to outdo each other. Ultimately they create a bunch of monsters who try to take them down.

I really enjoyed this fast paced fantasy. Of the series I barely liked the first book but I think that he has gotten better with each one. Three was my favorite, and I think this one ties with it.

Important ideas here, but (like all Wilber) incredibly dense.

Thank you, Emma Galvin, for narrating the very first audiobook that my daughter enjoyed listening to! We were both on the edge of our carseats for the last week as we listened to Tris's adventures. In a Chicago divided into factions, Tris must choose a group of people to belong to for the rest of her life. The factions don't always get along (think of the Hunger Games' districts) and she may never see her family again. By joining the Dauntless clan, she has to perform acts of bravery (or stupidity?) to prove that fear will never get the best of her. But factions are the least of her worries--she has to worry about war and saving those she loves. Absolutely can't wait to see the movie in March 2014!

I would recommend this book to anybody. The persistence of Greg Mortensen to fulfill his promises and try to improve the lives of thousands of school age children is incredible. I loved that I got to read a book about Pakistan and Afghanistan that showed something positive happening amidst all the negative. I truly appreciate Greg Mortensen and how much his influence helped people see that not all Americans are biased towards all Muslims and that people do want to help. It was also really nice to see how well Mortensen and his group work together despite huge cultural and language differences. Mortensen has also been able to teach a lot of people here in America about what Islam is supposed to be and how a majority of Muslim’s are hardworking people not terrorist. (duh) This book also, once again, made me realize how fortunate I am to have been raised in the United States where I have numerous opportunities to improve my life. As an educator one of the frustrating aspects of this book for me personally was the difference in attitudes that the school children in Pakistan and Afghanistan have towards education compared to the kids that we are dealing with on a daily basis here. Mark and I have talked about this a lot. School age kids in America are so used to having school and everything else available that they really take it for granted. Many of them do not realize that not everybody in the world has a chance to go to school and learn. So many students meet outside and do their work in the dust with sticks. The students in Pakistan and Afghanistan were thrilled to be given even a clean spiral notebook. It feels like in reality a great majority of students here really do not care about school, “it’s boring.” I know very well that there are two sides to the story and lots of kids do try hard but it is hard to wade through all the bad attitudes so often. I loved this book and am so glad that I read it. It helps give hope that the everyday people in these struggling countries will have opportunities. Education really is the key!

I love the short story collections. This, however, was one of the more predictable stories I've read of hers.

Read this for Erin's mother/daughter book report for her English class. I think I read it in about 7th grade, and as I re-read it, I realize there were probably parts that completely went over my head the first time! It's still a good read.
