What can I say about this story. Is it complex or rich or even that well written, nah. But it didn't need that, you see this was born out of the same thought processes that gave us the original "Secret Wars" storyline with the Beyonder. What if we created a bad guy so powerful, no 1 super hero could defeat him. Even cosmic level entities such as Galactus and the Celestials would have to team up and maybe even they couldn't stop him. Its pretty much just an only vaguely cohesive plot hook to allow us to have epic and crazy fights and cool art. Its good old fashioned silly comic book fun. Its the sort of thing I use to do in my head while I was bored waiting for my mom to pick me up after school. This kind of nonsensical black and white hyper action laced comic book story is at the heart of layers that make up my comic book fandom. So I bought it and reread it (actually until last year I had all the floppies but I sold them and then got a hard cover instead. See, I wrapped my childish nerd nostalgia in adult nerd collectorism. It it ain't hard back it ain't getting on my shelves these days). Guess what, this story is still fun today. I don't know if we are likely to see another powerful and silly story premise like this in today's ultra-serious comic book environment (I have hopes for the recent Avenger's Infinity Quest sotryline, so we'll see) and I'm not sure if that's good or bad. I'd probably come down on the side of, ....eh...I don't know. But seriously go read this if you love super heroes cause this is super hero-ness at its most raw, fighting a big bad guy with other super heroes and some cosmic space gods.

Though not as well written as Lewis' later work, this is a fun, fast-paced, great read. Also, given the banking situation today, it's awesome to get a glimpse at Wall Street behind the scenes during the last weird financial boom and bust that was fueled almost entirely by speculation. There's talk of Glass-Steigal and other topics that are only too relevant today, even though the action of the book took place in the 80s. Great read if you're at all interested in Wall Street.

All I have to say is 'WOW!' I underestimated the value of this book completely. It took quite a while for me to actually read it. It was given to me as gift, and I kept it on the back-burner for way too long. This book was so barbaric and absurdly brutal, but I could NOT put it down. The characters are terrific, the story is well thought out, and the writing is simple and easy to work through. I definitely recommend this book, and look forward to reading the next installments. I will say, though, the last page was cruel. Enjoy!

Maybe with the right critical viewpoint I could have gotten something impressive out of this. As it was I found it boring. Like reading a DIY manual on whaling a hundred a fifty years out of date.

This was an amazing book! The story is phenominal. An old man recounts his days of traveling with a circus. The man lives in a retirement home, and the story gets sad as you see how he deals with old age. The book switches between present and past. It's a fast pace and a great story! I recommend it to everyone!!!

good fantasy. Not quite the level of Harry Potter, but the series may develop. Likeable characters. Cute postscript giving an update on minor characters. Wish there had been more variety in the illustrations at the beginning of chapters. The same four or five images were used repeatedly.

Good book, I liked the dark world and the sexy hero, but it was too much romance novel for me and the font was too small for my eyes.
