This is by far the best book I have read this year.
Of Bank's books, this is the one that I enjoyed the most. Must find time to read again.

On a loan from Alex... another (unexpected) Malloren story... great read. I was sad when I reached the end of the Malloren series, but as I generally enjoy Jo Beverley's stories was happy to borrow this one - and only realized once well into it that some of the names were starting to sound familiar. Of course, once Petra arrives at Rothgar's home, all is revealed... Very enjoyable read, and glad to have been able to borrow it! In the acknowledgements, a Maria Rosa is thanked for help with the Italian - can't help wonder if this is "our" Maria Rosa from the European Romance Trading Group...?

This is a good read for boys and reluctant readers in the YR/intermediate range, nice and skinny! ;-) Girls will like it, too--the girls here are strong and thoughtful, supplying the gentler side without losing their ability to stand up for themselves. Cori and his cellmate Pippa are slaves for the Spears, who force them to dig for the shards that cling to the roots of the grass, and subject them to punishment and death for the slightest infraction. They're slaves without free time, always on the edge of starvation, never knowing if they will be separated, with their cellmate being their only real friend. That's the way things have been for years, until Cori befriends two newcomers, Tia and Bran, and the Spears begin to act strangely. War has come, and somehow these slaves have to learn to think for themselves and survive. I'm off to get the next book, which is out already. If it's as good as this one, I'll be looking for the third, which comes out this fall.

heartbreaking.
great story, but i'm not that into her writing style. it's a bit... obvious. i'll admit it-- i only bought this book b/c of the controversy. but, hey, who doesn't like a little controversy?

Exquisitely written. Not a lot of action.
I wasn't as into Thumped as I was Bumped. Don't get me wrong, still a much fun and enjoyable read. But this time, I felt more like I was being given a message than just reading for fun. And yes, that is part of this story, at least in my opinion. Full Review here: clicky

The "science" was too much of an obstacle for me to feast on the book - so I sampled here and there when something appealed to me.

Did we read this in high school? I read part of it recently and had very strong deja vu, but could not imagine where I would have encountered it before except in high school. Anyway, the part that I read recently was awesome, even if it did seem somewhat dated. Weird how something written in 1992 could already be dated, but I guess that is what happens when you write about race and post colonial politics.

“Intelligence is one of the greatest human gifts. But all too often a search for knowledge drives out the search for love. This is something else I've discovered for myself very recently. I present it to you as a hypothesis: Intelligence without the ability to give and receive affection leads to mental and moral breakdown, to neurosis, and possibly even psychosis. And I say that the mind absorbed in and involved in itself as a self-centered end, to the exclusion of human relationships, can only lead to violence and pain.”
