** spoiler alert ** Henry VI-Parts 1-3 Comments Shakespeare’s War of the Roses chronicle, consisting of Henry VI, Parts 1, 2, 3 and Richard III may have been the first mini-series in history. What it is not, is an accurate history. The four plays speed over thirty-four years, misplacing events, misrepresenting the ages of central characters, and in Part One of Henry VI paints a more than unflattering portrait of Joan of Arc, here called Joan La Pucelle (which translates as The Virgin and is used as a tongue in cheek expression). Throughout the four plays, kings are crowned and deposed and people shift loyalties with the speed of summer lightning. The only constant character is Richard Plantangenet, afterwards Richard III, whose only loyalty is to himself. He will, over the course of these plays, sacrifice his older brother and murder his brother’s two young sons, to gain the crown of England. Part One of Henry VI is mostly about the war in France and a quarrel for dominance over the young Henry, who is also de jure King of France. The play seems mostly a series of declamations punctuated by skirmishes. Part 2 is more about jealousy than anything else. Margaret of Anjou, Queen Consort to Edward’s rant against The Duke of Gloucester’s wife.. Not all these lords vex me half so much As that proud dame, the Lord Protector’s wife. She sweeps it through the Court with troops of ladies, More like an empress than Duke Humphrey’s wife. Strangers in Court do take her for the Queen. She bears a Duke’s revenues on her back, And in her heart she scorns our poverty. Shall I not live to be avenged on her? Contemptuous base-born callet as she is, She vaunted ‘mongst her minions t’ other day The very train of her worst wearing gown Was better worth than all my father’s land Till Suffolk gave two dukedoms for his daughter. may stand as testimony. Let it be noted that the Duchess of Gloucester came to a bad end. All the nobles are jealous of each other‘s privilege, and the right to succession is best understood as a family squabble over a will. This continues into Part 3. Henry is deposed, promises the Duke of York that if he is allowed to reign he will designate the House of York as his legal successors. This pisses off Queen Margaret who wants her and Henry’s son to succeed. More war, more killing, more “you’re the dirty rat who killed my brother” kind of action and speech. Edward, the eldest son of the Duke of York ascends the throne. He pisses off Warwick, the chief of the faction that wishes him to marry the sister of the King of France, by marrying Lady Gray, who wouldn’t let Edward into her pants without the marriage. Warwick switches sides, as does Edward’s brother George, equally upset by the marriage. Edward gives the throne back to Henry who, now, wants to be king in name, only. He agrees to be held in prison by Warwick’s brother but is freed by Richard, who has been created the new Duke of Gloucester, his brother. We’re at war, again. This time George switches back to his brother’s side. Edward’s forces win, he kills the heir of Henry and Margaret. Richard kills Henry and declares himself separated from family and brotherhood. Henry Part 3 ends with George and Richard kissing their brother, King Edward’s new born baby. It may appear less confusing on stage, but reading Henry VI, all three parts, can make your head dizzy what with all the changing of sides and the plasticity of titles. The Duke of Gloucester in part one is even in the same family as the Duke of Gloucester in part 3. I found it easier to read scene by scene, and then only two or three at a reading. It kept the confusion level down.
