A brilliant, sparely written, quiet book. It reads like a haunting dream. Very dark and surreal. 5 stars if it wasn't for the ending, which is a little shaky.

I didn't think much happened in this book... I guess it's setting up for the final book in the series, but it just seemed to introduce a bunch of people and the problem and that was it. Oh well. As always, a quick read.

Wow, a lot of chicanery and heartache are contained in this tiny book, written by one of our great non fiction writers, Jon Krakauer. The subject, Greg Mortenson, author of "3 Cups of Tea" about building schools in Afghanistan to thwart the Taliban, turns out to be a pack of lies. If Mortenson had any real plans to build schools, nothing materialized, most the schools built are now vacant. Mortenson's organization, CAI, was described as little more than his personal ATM. Not only is the money gone but organizations all over the world have been no doubt badly hampered by con job.

As a 6th grade teacher, I am always looking for books that will spur my boys on to reading. This series is a turbo ride for boys. They love the action-packed plot and the fascinating characters, such as giant talking cockroaches, bats that carry people in battle and rats that know martial arts! The book goes further by setting up an entire civilization living under New York City with prophecies guiding their actions. It is full of political intrigue and moral dilemmas. Personally, I love the fact that a strong male character can show such strength in his family relationships. His devotion to his baby sister, his mother, father and everyone else is inspiring and deeply touching. I would encourage young adults to put this on their list as it gives clues into the difficulty of coming-of-age.

This book turned out much differently than I originally thought it would. I was interested in the story frame – the following on an object throughout time and places. This is a story frame that I would like to write about as well. The beginning detailed description of Cornish’s work on the rifle is a brilliant example of striving for perfection and the difference between an art and a trade. I did not understand much of the terminology involved, but that did not take away from my appreciation of the details and feelings described. The bits of history were secondary, in my mind, to the author’s point of guns killing people. I think this book, in the hands of the right teacher, would be an excellent resource for teaching about our right to bear arms, the current debate about this right, and the violence and killing that seem to result from guns. This is such a pertinent issue nowadays, and especially relevant, I think, in Texas!

The first Clementine book is still my favorite, but any story with this adorable protagonist is fantastic!
Great book in a twisted sort of way.

Miles graduates from the academy and then is stationed to the North pole where he runs into trouble with the commander there. Enjoyable, but really for younger readers. I would have loved this when I was fourteen, but now it just seems ok.
