Set in New Zealand, the novel chronicles the complicated relationships between three emotional outcasts of mixed European and Maori heritage. Kerewin Holmes is a painter and a loner, convinced that "to care for anything is to invite disaster." Her isolation is disrupted one day when a six-year-old mute boy, Simon, breaks into her house. The sole survivor of a mysterious shipwreck, Simon has been adopted by a widower Maori factory worker, Joe, who is both tender and brutal toward the boy. Through shifting points of view, the novel reveals each character’s thoughts and feelings as they struggle with the desire to connect and the fear of attachment. This book is about family, traditions, culture.

I wish I had read this when I was younger, or maybe not right in the middle of a reading frenzy. I kept waiting and reading on for when the action and excitement would finally begin, but it was only until the last chapter that I felt anything substantial. I focused too much on reading into the lines because I was so desperate to connect with the characters (which never happened, disappointingly). I don't think I'll read this one again. Maybe when I'm super old or something, if it's still floating around then....

I kept passing this novel over and over for other more interesting reads, or so I thought. I kept looking at it thinking I wouldn't really enjoy it, but surprisngly I did. From back cover: "Sheriff Nick Morrelli isn't equipped to deal with this case that is terrorizing the small, close-knit community of Platte City, Nebraska. Knowing he needs help, he calls in one of the FBI's best criminal profilers, Maggie O'Dell. And with the help of a small town sheriff who is clearly out of his depths, Maggie starts to put together the gruesome picture of a killer. The picture of someone who has already been executed for his crimes. When another victim is found and a third kidnapped, Nick and Maggie realize they're running out of time. And the terrible truth begins to become clear. Was Jeffreys convicted of crimes he didn't commit? Or has a cold-blooded killer been given the chance to perfect his crime? This debut thriller pumps the suspense...Maggie is gutsy and appealing as an FBI agent facing constant danger."

This book is so good. It's such a good example of fantastic contemporary fiction. It reminded me slightly (in terms of prose) of Francine Prose's A Changed Man or Jay McInery's The Good Life - two modern books I love. (If you don't like those novels, you might not like this one.) What this book does really well is compare and contrast modern day Los Angeles with China while still keeping you interested in the characters and the plot. It also asks interesting questions about the meaning of art in different cultures. And finally, there's a twist at the end that made me want to start over and read the whole book from the beginning.

This book was soooooo amazing. I had heard about from so many different people that it was amazing, but I was always forgetting the title, and I wasn't ever really that interested, but I finally picked it up, and I think it is one of the best books ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just didn't have the stamina to finish this book. It took me almost three weeks to read 200 pages. The main problem was that it didn't hold my interest for more than ten pages at a time. I really wanted to like it but I just didn't, sorry. The reason I gave it two stars instead of just one, is because I can see the appeal this would have for thosewho enjoy the genre.

I had this long, crazy, passionate discussion about this book with my 11th-grade concertmaster last year. We both agreed that while she's not the best WRITER, she tells amazing stories. I was hooked on this series from the first pages and read them all on my nook in a week during my winter break. As I got to the end of the last one, I started slowing down my reading and made the process as painfully slow as possible to keep it from ending so soon!

Another reviewer of this book states that "Jack Vance is the best writer that you've never heard of", and I thought more than once that such was the case here for me. This was a simple, swiftly moving, sword and sorcery tale, told with wonderful imagination, a dry wit, and lovely prose. It also has plot shifts and an interleaving of story lines which differentiate great from good. What magic the story describes is interwoven with a very light touch; a thing of mischief and wonder as opposed to destruction and demon curses. In one instance, a young girl plots to steal the hat from the head of a faerie king so that he must grant her a wish. At times the novel felt like a charming mash-up of A Game of Thrones and The Last Unicorn. Within Martin we recognize scheming amongst feudal Kings, an aching desire for the reunion of child and parent, and an author not squeamish about putting a beloved character to the rack if the story calls for such. From Beagle we recall the lyrical and effortless prose, archetypes from traditional Western fairy tales, and a sense that over time, if not in each given instance, good will win out over evil.

Just what does a class pet do while you're busy learning math and reading all day? A lot more than you'd expect! This book presents the world as seen by Humphrey, a hamster who's a class pet. As a hamster-lover, I would definitely recommend this little series.
A bit repetitive, but it was overall a great book. I think Eker does a great job of encouraging readers to master the inner game of wealth, but that's about it. He definitely gives tips on how to control one's thoughts. I found his perspective of learned behaviors and money the most interesting aspect of the entire book. I did not learn anything reading this book that I had not read from others or even other self-help books, so I'm not quite certain how much of a benefit it was to me. However, if you have not read other personal finance books with tips on how to think like a millionaire (think healthy thoughts), then you might find that "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind" is exactly what you need.
