It’s hard to review The Reading Promise by Alice Ozma without gushing a little. To be fair, I am really the perfect audience for this book. As a life-long obsessive reader, I recognized many of the books that Alice and her father read together, which gave me frequent moments of happy nostalgia. Also, I come from a family where reading together was a common occurrence. I have fond memories of my sisters and I curled up on the couch listening to my mom read to us way into my high year years. And since I was so much older than my younger sisters (there is an age gap of 5-9 years between us), I spent a lot of time reading to them. I read the Dr. Seuss ABC book to my youngest sister, Lynne, so many times that I can still recite most of the little poems he wrote for each individual letter from memory – all the way from “Big A, Little A, What begins with A? Aunt Annie’s Alligator. A. A. A” to “Big Z, Little Z. What begins with Z? I do. I am Zizzer Zazzer Zuzz as you can plainly see.” And then there was the infamous incident involving Edgar Allen Poe’s The Tell Tale Heart, a stormy evening and a door that I was able to unobtrusively nudge into creaking at a particularly suspenseful time in the story…. And so, this book couldn’t have appealed more to me if the author had written specifically for me. Having said that, I found The Reading Promise charming above and beyond the nostalgia it evoked. It isn’t just a bibliophile’s celebration of their favorite childhood books. It is the story of a father and daughter who made a commitment to each other – to read together every day for 1,000 days. It’s a story about how it is vital and possible to prioritize and make time for the things that are important to us. It’s a story about how books can help us connect to each other. It’s a story about a single father using books to help him navigate a young girl’s life. It’s a story about a love of books, a love of family and of the vital importance of taking time to experience and appreciate both.

I really just love this series! There's a little bit of everything in these books... action, romance, adventure, sci-fi. I'd highly recommend it to anyone. How long do we have to wait for the next book in the series to come out??? Too long, that's for sure!

This is, I think, the fourth translation of The Odyssey that I've read, which still doesn't make me an expert, either on Homer's poem or his translators. It just proves that none of the translations that I read prior to this one really stayed put in my memory. I think I liked Butler's prose translation best, but, as I say, my memory seems to have leaked a little on the pages. Which, given the source and (supposed) circumstances of the original epic, doesn't say much for those translators or my memory. Fagles's translation is good, occasionally too idiomatic for my taste, but good. I would really, really like to get my hands on Guy Davenport's "commentary" on The Odyssey published here in the U.S. as a "Pennant's Key-Indexed Guide" and (apparently) then stolen by a Canadian publisher for "Cole's Notes".

I discovered this book, initially, via a mini-series production of it that my 7th grade teacher showed me. I immediately got the book and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed it and it lead me to a few of his other books that I also really enjoyed. I also discovered, thanks to this book, that I enjoy Historical fiction.

This is written twenty years ago and still the medical profession lags way behind Bernie. He describes the inception of his Cancer self-help group ECaP. He introduces the "exceptional patient" who refuse to accept defeat and teach that mind can dramatically affect the body. Just the descriptions of patients who are supposed to die and don't is worth the read. But not all patients experience "self-induced healing" yet the goal for one and all is health and unconditional love of self. Bernie states "If you are suffering from some life-threatening disease, the change I'm talking about may save your life or prolong it well past medical expectations....If you have a minor disorder, or if you're not sick but now really enjoying life, the principles I've learned from exceptional patients can bring you joy and help you avoid illness in the future."

Ace The IELTS - Third Edition Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn

This book depicts small town life at the turn of the century. "What will people think?" is always on their minds. It tells the story of a boy coming of age and an old man scandalizing the town by marrying a woman half his age just months after his wife dies. I think this book is a great portrayal of life during that time. It is hard to believe it took place over 100 years ago. The entire story is written in the colloquialism of the south during that time, which makes it even more real. So many times after reading a chapter, I would find myself thinking in the same colloquialism! This is one of those books filled with so many great stories, it keeps your attention all through out. And it appeals to every emotion - action, romance, humor, drama. An all-around great book!

This book is very organized. You'll get a lot from it because it has a lot of events and it does not go so deep in each event so that you won't get lost in History. Although some minor parts were frustrating because they were not completely objective. Regardless, this book is so good.
