I love this book. As a writer and avid reader of King books, it is incredible to get a glimpse into his life, his mind-excellent.

the 'kate shugak' books are set in alaska. they are fun and interesting mysteries.
this book inspired me to read aloud to any and all interested friends i came across while carrying this book in my bag, if only to let them in to the extremely strange, compact, yet lush & full worlds that james tate creates. every single poem is a little window into a very odd world. my fave was "of whom am i afraid?", in which a yuppie-ish guy goes to a feed store and casually asks a farmer if he's ever read the work of emily dickinson. the farmer says something like, "of course. she's a real pistol!" and then tells the story of how he got into a big fight about it with his neighbor. of course, that summation does not do the poem justice--it's clever, funny, wistful and just fuckin' perfect. not all the poems in here work like that, some are very skippable, but this made me remember why i used to love poetry so damn much.

This tale of a brother and sister who learn their grandparents are caretakers of a haven for fabulous creatures, many of whom are dangerous, is well-developed and satisfying. The children learn, rise to challenges, make mistakes, and grow--and have the time of their lives. It's a great kids' read--for the kid in me, at least. I'm going to hunt up the 2 sequels next.

difficult, but definitely worth it. at times the story is totally inaccessable, and I nearly put it aside many times. but stick with it and it's an incredibly creepy story that will stay with you long after you've finished. it took some effort, but this is one of my favourites.

love the illustrations and in my humble opinion, it has cross appeal for all ages
I'm not going to review every Dirk Pitt adventure I read in the summer of '96 (you'll have to listen to Bryan Adam's song to hear a complete list), but Dragon stands out for a number of reasons: 1) Cussler finally figured out the cold war was over, so instead of fighting Ruskies, Dirk Pitt squared off against the Japs. 2) Instead of thwarting one big nuclear attack, there were lots of little suit-cased sized bombs to stop, so the book had a bit more of a modern, small terror-state feel. 3) Ninjas! (because he's fighting the japs). There's this one scene where Pitt et al are in a jeep fleeing a van full of ninjas, and they decide to crash through the front display window of a hard-ware store, where they then hold the ninjas off with shot-guns and flaming cans of paint. The single most kick-ass scene ever.

I'm a real Clive fan but in this one he really did his homework. I know it was written just for me - about banking in the old west days of early railroad. I learned a lot about banking, railroads and early electricity!

i think it, but a little predictable at the end, but was a good "feel good" book

I can't believe this was written by a man! This was a wonderful experience of Japan and the tea houses.
