I have to say, I am surprised to see so many bad reviews to this book.... Ok, I am not an academic, I am a disabled, very ill and with many problems in my own life, 50 years old woman, who reads to get pleasure. And pleasure this book gave me. It also gave me the wish to read Austen, (I did not even see the movie or the BBC series) which I think it is an achievement for the author.... I liked other books by Potter a bit more, but still, I reckon the kind of fiction she creates is great, funny and entertaining, which (at least under my point of view) is the point of books. In this day an age in which young people read little or none, this book makes an interesting read which I could even suggest to my 13 years old daughter.... and, foul language? I have read this book a few weeks ago, and my memory may fail me...but I don't recall language which will beat Eastenders or some other TV programs.... I liked the book. Not the best of Potter, but I really liked it. If you like me, read to have a good time, a bit of a laugh and, sometimes get emotional.... I reckon you'll like it, but, by all means: go on read the other reviews...there are many, many people who gave it 1 star....and in here I come to the thought I always get when confronted with *critics* in all forms of art.... do they write? the book critics? do they make films? the film critics? do they paint? the art critics? I always say to my child that, to criticize a singer, a musician, any person in some profession, we first have to have the ability to do at least 10% of what they do..... I reckon Potter does a good job.
I like this book more than I thought I would, and it certainly was much better in the second half than the first. In some ways, standard fantasy, but in other ways surprisingly original. In fact, the book surprised me more than once. Not with any dramatic twists, but how sometimes situations came to a very realistic, unsatisfying conclusion. The "magic" of the world is cool, and I like that it didn't bog down in unnecessary explanations of how it works. The Andat character, Seedless, is wonderfully realized. Overall I found the characters very human and believable.
science possibilities in the summer is good for a weary head.

This sixth Maisie Dobbs novel explores even more deeply than the previous ones the psychological effects of war on survivors, both combatants and civilians. Beginning on Christmas Eve, 1931, the plot unfolds with Winspear's usual attention to period detail but at the same time provokes thought about our world of 2010-11: a suicide bomber in London, a terrorist threatening chemical attacks, turf wars between the police and military intelligence interfering with discovery and capture of the attacker. In Winspear's 1930s London, Maisie is in the middle of all the conflicts, urging and practicing compassion toward damaged World War I veterans and a variety of suffering women including her employee's wife, her best friend, and a young chemist arrested for union activity. She has better success with the women than with the men, and seems quite far ahead of her time in her ideas about treatment of mental disorders. Frighteningly competent, our Maisie.

One of McEwan's best in my opinion. Short and easy to read, this book tells the story of two people who meet, fall in love and get engaged in the late 1950s. It is hard to talk about the plot without giving too much away. Needless to say it captures the strict traditions of the time and truly harks back to another era. It puts the 1960s into perspective and makes you realise just how different things were before that decade came along and changed life forever. McEwan perfectly captures their relationship in its every intimacy.

This is my story: I was waiting for my mom in a Foley's Department Store one afternoon. I had done my shopping and was bored, so I sat in the furniture department while she finished. The voracious reader I am, I picked up this book (hardback, original print, discarded from a library in New York) which was displayed on the breakfast tray artfully arranged on the display bed and sat on the display couch to bubblegum my mind away until Mom came back. (Note: I was 27 years old, not 13 as you may have assumed.) I was thoroughly smitten by the cozy 1950's era family and the trials young Beany was facing. The book intrigued me so much that I searched the internet for the books and bought every single book in the series (hardback, original print as much as possible). Maybe it's just me, but reading these books is like watching Bing Crosby. It's sweet and kitschy, but not overly saccharine and preachy. Yes, Beany always learns her lesson (and cooks and sews and cleans), but I always sighed a smile a the end.

Okay...so it really isn't "occult", but it's where I placed it. This is a fantastic book that takes a look at the modern native american and his/her place in the world and the use of "medicene". The medicene in this case is the term used for the mystical and earth-centered magics of the native peoples. This book is a fairly easy read and really shows the reader what traditional Native American Medicene is about and what it can do when properly used. A good read, and recommended.

I am both excited and sad about the release of this book. I can't imagine an end to these wonderful characters or the fantastic story JKR has spun. For those reluctant to read this series, take a leap and ENJOY!

Heart rending in parts - brought tears to my eyes. Well written / well-crafted story. Touches on our associations with one another as people, as siblings, and with industrialized society in general. Worth the time to read.

Another great read, and even though this is the third in the series, it was still captivating and kept me reading the whole way through. I am a big Dean Koontz fan and have really enjoyed all of his series. At the end I was left hoping that there may be a fourth installment. :)
