Another book recommended by a friend. I don't typically read mystery books. I get too nervous and to me, the price isn't worth the pleasure. The desire to know the resolution is what kept me reading. With that said, this was a good book. I thought the characters were endearing and I liked the part words played in the story. It's a Newberry Medal winner and I think books under that umbrella are worth reading.

Fun, tongue-in-cheek darkish comedy thriller.

A lovely book to read when home sick. Well-developed, dynamic characters, cohesive plots....I would not be embarrassed to be an adult reading this book in public.

I'm very impressed by how this felt so similar to watching an episode of the show. The characters were written very well and the story was just as high quality. Artwork is nice too!
i love David Cross. but this book was a test of that love. David is great, but let's be honest; he's not Bill Hicks. Goat Boy could give you his actual frustration - REAL rage - but still make it *funny*. that's the key. there was a lot of funny stuff in this book, don't get me wrong. there was just WAY too much entirely not funny stuff. anger is funny, not always.

I almost gave up on this 1/3 of the way through, but I am so pleased I stuck with it. A thoroughly entertaining read of a genre (chick-lit/adventure YA) that I wouldn't normally touch. I picked this up because it was BOM at RT book reviews. I do think, though, that the humour the author used didn't transition well for us who are not Americans! I often felt like that person at the party who was always clueless as to what everyone else was laughing about! However, this was a great read and I enjoyed getting to meet all these girls' and seeing them grow to believe in themselves.

House on Mango Street Sandra Cisneros 110pp. ISBN: 0679734775 The House on Mango Street is about Esperanza not wanting to be part of her run down neighborhood and the low expectations the world let alone her society has for her. This book is all about Esperanza finding her own identity and what she has to do so that she can get out of her neighborhood and not live a life like her mother and father. Esperanza is a girl who just wants to be accepted and have a life that other people have. For example to not have to shop at a junk store and to also not to have to go home for lunch while all the other students in her school stay there amd eat at the canteen. Esperanza is a girl who wants to get away from the segregation and the low expectations that are given to her and the whole spanish society. Esperanza is a self determined girl who wants to be able to enjoy the riches of life and not have to live up to the low epectations that the rest of the spanish society follows. She wants to be the one who breaks out and live a great life with a bright future. But she knows that she can't forget where she came from and lose the identity that was given to her by the society and the world. Sandra Cisneros did a good job showing how young children who have a rough life keep the faith or hope of possibly escaping the rough life when they get older. Cisneros did a good job by showing this through Esperanza.

Read compulsorily, utterly hackneyed at points, utterly unbelievable at others.
