I heard a lot of mixed things before reading this book: "it's cliche" "it's incredible" "it's overrated" etc. Eventually I decided to pick it up and read it for myself and I'm very glad I did. The book manages to capture, between the lines, the very emotions the characters are feeling. You begin to feel them yourself and even not having been in Charlie's (the protagonist's) situation you find yourself understanding exactly where he's coming from. I read this book now as a graduating senior in HS, but I wish I had read it in freshmen year. I think at every age you can get something else out of it and I will be reading "Perks" again sometime.

I had heard that this book rivaled The Firm. I will strongly state my opinion that I feel otherwise. For me, this one moved way too slow for a Grisham lawyer novel. It was a book that as I turned the final page I actually felt a little angry for having spent time reading it.

After reading, I was disappointed to realize the author never continued writing about the main character. Lee Mitchell is a Black barrister, and I enjoyed getting to know her through this legal drama. The plot was a bit clunky, as might be expected from a first novel, but most of the characters and the setting were quite engaging - good airplane reading.

** spoiler alert ** I have a good number of Marian Babson books on my mystery shelf, and often I overlook the thin volumes in favor of something else, something meatier. That is always a mistake. Every time I pick up a Marian Babson book I am drawn into the story quickly and am sad when I get to the end. Nine Lives to Murder was no different. There was not a murder as such, but the story was still fin and entertaining and well worth my time and energy. If you have not read a Marian Babson book, pick one up. You won't be sorry.
