I would have loved this novel when I was 18, what with its classical (Sophocles) and modern (Kafka, Beckett, Joyce, and Borges) touchstones and its allusions to philosophical and theoretical paradigms. But I'm not 18, and, while I can appreciate what Robbe-Grillet is after with this tale of detection, I can't fully enjoy it. When I was 18, intellectual puzzles, like this one, were enough for me. I would have named "Last Year at Marienbad" one of my favorite movies that year. I liked the feeling of my mind trying, and failing, to wrap itself fully around an intricately constructed puzzle. Not so much anymore. It's odd. Reading Auster's "New York Trilogy" (which clearly owes a debt to "The Erasers"), I had no difficulty digesting the heady mix of theory and narrative. I felt like ideas were flying at me fast and furious. With "The Erasers," it's not so much that Robbe-Grillet throws ideas at you so much as he trots out thought experiments. It's not that I don't like a challenging read. It's just that I like a different type of challenge than Robbe-Grillet sets before his reader, and this derives, I think, from the fact that Robbe-Grillet seems to be taunting me to make sense of his wily narrative. I don't really like being taunted. Still, I can see that this is an important novel, and it's not nearly as off-putting as I maybe made it seem, but it's a bit annoying.
