Gripping narrative meets thorough research in this true story about the world's fair in Chicago and a murderer who lived nearby, preyed on visitors, and killed at least nine people and possibly 50 or more. One small factoid: They built the Ferris wheel for the fair to compete with the Eiffel Tower, which had been contructed for the previous world's fair in Paris.

Rosanne Cash's articulate autobiography is a worth-while read. Living in the shadow of her legendary father, Johnny Cash, was not an easy thing; but she navigated the various challenges to become a credible songwriter/singer in her own right.

Sweet book.

A beautifully written, heartwrenching memoir of the daughter with a schizophrenic mother.
why are people so bitter about this book? yes, she used a sh!t-ton of similes, etc. and all of her references are fake. whatever. and pessl sounded show-offey with all of her Blue-isms. well, good for her. she wrote like a genius immature high school student would. joey and dawson had well-beyond-high school witty banter, but you weren't complaining back in your capeside days, were you? geez. give the girl a break.

This sincere picture book tells the same type of story as Arthur Miller's screenplay "Playing for Time" in which a person is in the compromising position of playing music for their persecutor (a moral dilemma). It kept them alive but full of guilt. This one has poignant illustrations and beautifully descriptive images in words. This is one of the better picture books about the holocaust--it doesn't hold back or trivialize feelings or events. I recommend it middle school teachers, for sure.

I've never read a book straight through simply to get it away from me before. Damn Contemporary American Lit courses. Though there were those who enjoyed it.

as a teenager, the whole story around sophie and the mysterious major with his postcards etc. really captured me. as an adult, i cant fail to notice that it is just poorly written. (kind of shocked to realize that this did not bug me when i was younger, lol...) however, the educational parts on philosophical schools (which were sort of boring back then) are still educational (and nice, easy to read overviews of certain time periods) now.
