I realised I didn't know much about geometry, and that, if you took away the maths, it would probably be quite interesting. It was! Everything from Euclid to Einstein James

Really enjoyed the story. A young woman of Chinese ancestry (living in the US) decides to move to China, believing the propaganda about how wonderful it is and how she can help. She ends up living (for a time) in the Chinese countryside during China's "Great Leap Forward". Well-written, a compelling story.

Easily one of the best books I have ever read.

** spoiler alert ** I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could. Three stars doesn't seem to be quite enough but I'm sort of stingy with my four stars. **Spoilers for the book and Season 1 of True Blood** * * * * So I read this book because I watched and enjoyed the first season of True Blood. I had heard that the book was fairly different from the tv show but I have to say that for the most part, I disagree with that. I thought most of the story was very similar to the tv show, some of the chapters even seemed to correspond exactly to specific episodes. Since I'd seen the show first, I knew who the bad guy was and I think that effected my opinion of the books, I wasn't surprised by really anything. It is hard to rate book without comparing it to True Blood. For example, the book doesn't mention Sookie's friend Tara at all and in the show she was pretty involved. I sort of missed that character and felt sad for book Sookie that she didn't have a friend. Also, the ending was a bit different in that the vampire Bubba wasn't on the show, he is kind of a weird character though so that was pretty unexpected. And on the show it was Bill and Sam that saved Sookie from Rene, though I did like that Sookie saves herself in the book. Also, the other big difference was Eric kiling Long Shadow. In the show that was Bill that killed him and that is why he had to leave town - to be punished for that. I must admit that I liked that part of the tv show better than the book. Also, in the show Eric wasn't really interested in Sookie though I've read some spoilers for season 2 and I believe that may be coming up. Anyway, I liked the book, I was lighter than I expected. I had thought it would be spookier but I wasn't really scared at all. The book wasn't really even that graphic and I had expected it to be. I can't wait to read the next books though and see where the story goes from here.

I had forgotten how amazing the 2nd book in Kate Atkinson's series was! In Case Histories, she tells the story of three murders separated by generations, but in this book she does the reverse. One Good Turn is the story of how one seemingly random act of violence can impact the lives of 4 characters over the course of 3 days. These four characters each get their own very detailed stories, with a ton of complicated overlaps and seeming coincidences. All of her disparate plot threads come crashing back together in the last few pages, making for one of the most satisfying reads in recent memory!
It's nice to see a lot of old Rogue/Wraith characters here, even if it's just cameos. Jaina's promotion to a front-burner character seems to have stuck; let's hope that they can bring some other characters who aren't in their 60s and 70s to the forefront. On par with Legacy of the Force, much better than Dark Nest. And hey, Lando.
I could not shake the constant feeling that I was missing something while I was reading this. I really felt like if I was smarter, I would get more out of the book. Since the author has her doctorate in physics, I could be right. I'm not saying the book is not interesting, because it is. I just really felt like I was missing something.

S E Hinton is my favorite author. I love all of her books. I think that she was really brave to write about things like this at a time when woman weren't supposed to.

I would give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars. As a Dawn French lover I had had high expectations. The first third of the book was really slow, though, and a disappointment. Only when the story line developed a bit did it all come together, and in the end it was a thoroughly enjoyable book that did have me laugh out loud a couple of times and a smile or grin on my face many times.
I read this series once a year. I'm thoroughly enjoying it presently. In fact, I'm going to sign off and get back to reading more of it tonight!
