Interesting mix of a historical murder mystery and a current death penalty case. Very well done.

Although I do have conflicted feelings about those who are thrust into the limelight when they're young, I can't say this memoir made me feel particularly sympathetic. This a by-the-numbers tale about a child actor who gets laid, gets drunk, and gets addicted to the drug-du-jour in pretty rapid succession. If McCormick had maybe taken a deeper look at what prompted her little turn into addiction, or even the industry's reaction or support, it might have been a little more interesting... but, nope, most of the story is peppered with anecdotes about personal jets and trysts with nominally famous small-screen starts.

oh! this book was great (: I just love the boy ^^ hehe
Did not live up to my expectations, based on other books I've read by this author.
This is a book that has it all: unbridled imagination, devastating black humor, breathtaking suspense, romantic poetry and even unyielding social commentary. It's a classic attack on the Soviet system, but it goes beyond and takes a hard, uncompromising look at the human condition. It has survived the collapse of the Soviet Union and will certainly go on to enter the Russian pantheon of classics, along with Tolstoy, Gogol and Dostoievsky. A must read!

Meh. That is the best I can muster for this book. I found myself sighing every time I picked it up because I knew it would never hook me, but once I start a book I finish it. The whole thing was just ... Meh.

Had it shelved for ages and suddenly picked it up on a whim--surprisingly self-aware, biting reflection of late 19C, esrly 20 C uppercrust Anglo mores from a female POV. As always, the lasting impression is that, second class citizens aside, aristocratic, wealthy and well-educated women did continously found ways out of society's traps--albeit nearly always through sexuality. Still, it's fascinating to note that despite all social messages to the contrary women such as Elinor Glyn were privileged enough to carve oit successful careers. It really is always the lower classes, the uneducated, who suffer most.
Romance. Minerva Dobbs is an actuary, so she knows all about risk and she can tell Calvin Morrisey -- smart, charming, and handsome -- is a bad one. Themes this book has: open-toed shoes, chicken marsala, being sexy even though you're not a size 8, Krispy Kremes, insurance statistics, scheming ex's, bets, Elvises Presley and Costello. This was the second time I've read this and I can now safely say it doesn't make my Crusie Top Five. It just doesn't do it for me like some of her other books. It's either the progression of the romance or, hey, I just realized there's no other big plotlines. Maybe that's it. Crusie usually has more than one thing going on in her books. This one doesn't have a murder or a mystery in it, not even any job-related dissatisfaction or family caretaking issues. There's a wedding, but it's mostly in service of character motivation, not plot. That puts a lot of pressure on the romance, which, in this case, is slow getting off the ground and the sex only comes after we've all agreed it's true love. Three stars -- but only because I prefer her books where there's a lot more going on.
