Three stars for the concept and world-building, but no stars for character development or plot. It's a shame -- the whole book, you're expecting the story to be building up to some poignant climax, but all plot threads fall short. The characters are neither distinctive nor interesting, and I found my interest waning as the novel dragged on. I do not understand the hype.

The writing was different and I loved it. The narrator was "death". Great book.

One of agatha's greatest books. Written in a way that no one can replace. Has an unbelievable ending!

I hated this compared to her other books I've read. Just horrible.

The book is funny, very funny, at times. And Rachman writes quite well. I found the vignettes about the development of the paper a bit of a cop-out in terms of plotting, but the individual episodes on each character are well done. But by about halfway through I was starting to wonder why it was always the female characters who wound up seeming so pathetic, abject even. It's not that bad things don't happen to some of the men, or that some of them aren't really assholes, but they aren't humiliated in the way the women are (in fact they sometimes do the humiliating). So men can be bad, but women are just sad in this telling. Not such a cheery message and also not one I'm sure he was even aware he was imparting.

I have this marked as "read" but I don't remember finishing it. It's completely possible that I did, though. I picked it up in an airport around when it came out. I remember beginning the novel impressed at the author's ability to produce an almost perfect first-person voice for the viewpoint character. It is written in first-person, right? I can probably regurgitate some facts about goings-on being slowly revealed throughout the plot, and things getting increasingly depressing. But I never remember any moral or ethical questions I had about the subject ever intensifying or gaining context or becoming more interesting. As the story went on it just got sadder, but also duller, and it didn't ask any new questions, and by the end of the book I was completely bored. If I finished, at least. I can't even remember.

This is Tapply's latest Brady Coyne. I've really enjoyed this mystery series over the years..like his characters, the plot twists, and the Boston settings.

I adored this book. It was so carefree straight from the get-go, which somehow Libba Bray pulls off even though the guy is dying of mad cow disease. I adored the characters, and especially the garden gnome. (: I'd say a great light read except for the beginning is pretty sad. So read the beginning when you are in a philosophical mood or something. Actually, don't listen to my advice. I'm tired. But read it!

I absolutely loved this book. One of the reviews I read called it nostalgia porn and it sure was. The story line was awesome and fun and the 80's references made it even more entertaining. There was one point when I was reading it when I needed to brush my teeth and I took the book with me because I couldn't stop reading it. It isn't deep or philosophical, it is just good fun. I recommend it to all my gaming geek friends; especially those who spent their adolescent/teen years in the 80's.
