“The Kite Runner”, a world literature novel, by Khaled Hosseini is a powerful story about finding one’s character in life. It captures the subjects of family, friendship, tragedy, and love. Secrets are revealed and add an entire twist to the story. Amir, the narrator, struggles throughout his childhood with not feeling accepted by his father, Baba. He was a soft-spoken young boy, who enjoyed reading fiction stories and writing folk tales. Baba, a businessman, wanted Amir to be like average young boys growing up in Afghanistan. Secretly, Baba admired Hassan, his servant’s son, because he enjoyed sports such as Kite fighting, he stood up for himself and Amir, and enjoyed the out doors. All the qualities that Baba favored, but Amir didn’t possess. Nonetheless, Amir’s friendship with Hassan wasn’t great either. Hassan loved Amir as a brother. He stood up for him when the neighborhood bullies confronted him, he ran Amir’s kite after his victory, and he never betrayed Amir in any way. However, Amir manipulated Hassan. He criticized his intellectual abilities, envied him when Baba was nice to him, and watched him be taken advantage of by the neighborhood bullies. Then, as the war began in Afghanistan, Baba and Amir fled the country to America. Living in California, Baba and Amir started a whole new life. Baba worked at a gas station and sold goods at the county’s flea market to put Amir through school. Once he graduated he went on to college to study to be a writer. Baba once again was disappointed in his decisions. He had higher expectations for Amir. He wanted him to live the “American Dream” of being a doctor or lawyer. But Amir followed his childhood passion in writing short stories that turned into novels. As Hosseini began to enclose, significant events began to ravel in Amir’s life. He eloped with a woman named Soraya, Baba’s health began to fail, and he receives a call from Baba’s business partner, Rahim Khan. This call from Rahim is Hosseini’s call to action. “There’s a way to be good again”, Rahim Khan. As Amir traveled back to Afghanistan he was nearly blinded by the sight of his homeland. The beautiful Afghanistan he once knew with pomegranate trees and two-story houses were all destroyed by the Taliban. There were homeless men, women, and children on the streets. Innocent children were prostituted and lawbreakers were brutally punished in public by the Taliban officers. Amir’s purpose of going back to Afghanistan is fulfilled when he is confronted again by his old nemesis, who is now the chief leader of the Taliban officers. Amir finds that his trip back to his past actually helped him find his character in life. Hosseini ties the truth to the lies that were kept. Khaled Hosseini uses “The Kite Runner” to give the world a sense of Afghani culture and to inform others about the cruelty that occurred in Afghanistan back then and even now. I recommend anyone to read this novel to be informed and entertained by the story of a young boy’s journey to find his character in life.

** spoiler alert ** I was initially turned off by the summary of the novel -- a man kills his wife in an alcoholic rage, tries to kill his 5-year daughter Merry and then himself, all witnessed by the couple's other daughter, 10-year-old LuLu. He lives and goes to prison. I'm glad I read on. The novel is about what happens to the girls and how they process and deal with the rest of their lives. LuLu wants to control everything and wipe out the past -- does not want it to be known what happened in her family. She refuses contact with her father. Merry, the one who was stabbed, plays along wtih the fabricated story of the two being orphans, yet feels compelled to visit her father in prison because he is all alone. It all comes to a head at the close of the novel in a riveting scene...

Não há muito o porquê falar sobre o enredo desse romance, todo mundo conhece Capitu e Bentinho. Mas este livro seria só mais um livro, se não fossem pelas constantes reflexões que o velho Bentinho faz em suas memórias, tornando a leitura mais interessante e dando outra alma que não se limita somente à duvida da traição.

A quick and easy read but overall unsatisfying, although I did like the twist of one of the characters dying (I won't say which one!) before the end of the book. Anyway, thought it was 'vampire lore' that they couldn't be seen in mirrors? Not bad for a freebie I guess, although I did notice more editorial typos than I would normally find in a book.

A really interesting set of short stores all set in (obviously) the wildnerness of Wyoming. Perhaps I had just heard too much about her writing after Brokeback Moutain, but this didn't really do much for me. Quite a bit of really dysfunctional sex and (sexuality aside) broken characters - people who have little to nothing to live for and exist in a state of banality. Not fun. It does show that she has quite the hand at creating vivid characters (even if I didn't like them much) and I'd like to read more of her work that's less, well, dysfunctional.
