My first thought: "This book is very strange". Then I got a couple of definition words in and saw why this book was getting so many good reviews. The structure is very unique and I think that might be creating a lot more hype for this book than the actual story or it's writing. However, don't let this last statement mislead you, I did enjoy the story and even more so, the writing. This has to be the shortest book I have picked up in the past two years, yet this book in written in such a way that I really had to slow down my reading pace to think about what I was reading in order to understand everything that Levithan was trying to get across. At times I would just read the passage and not get how it really played into the story, then I would read the definition word and it would click. That was a pretty cool feature and at times, very creative. Through the first half of the book I was noticing how many passages talked about faults of his girlfriend, and I was curious if he would outline his own faults. Well, the answer is....he does, but not in an out and out fashion. Levithan lets his character insert his faults in a passing manner where it plays a much smaller role than the focus of the passage. I do not condone cheating for any reason, but I wonder what his role was, leading up to her straying. If his few admissions of jealousy, and low confidence are any indication, I bet he had some blame in the matter. I only gave this book three stars because sometimes the passages were good, then other times they were bad. A few times they were so great that I wanted to highlight the entire thing (especially Contiguous). Other times I felt like they were just way to repetitive. The story was not anything original but if those few bad passages would have been refined or taken out, this would have been worth five stars. Would I recommend it?? Yes...only I do not think this is worth $10. Read it, but borrow it from a friend.

I used to read all Dick Francis' books as soon as they came out. I had many autographed, but for some reason I went on hiatus from them. I guess he also went on one writing them. Anyway, I had forgotten what interesting stories and nice characters he creates. His favorite milieu is the world of racing, but he likes to touch on other professions or hobbies as well, which I'm sure he researches. In this one the protagonist is a top chef, so there is a lot about food and kitchens, which I loved. Another character is a concert violist, so there are interesting tidbits about that life too. I really loved the book, couldn't put it down, and will now go back and read the prior ones.

I first read this book in a class at SLU taught by Dr. Ferrari and absolutely fell in love with it. Out of print, I guarded my Xeroxed copy that was supplied to us in class and searched for a bound copy of this gem for years and finally, thanks to the interweb, found one that I've treasured. It's a story of World War I and its impact on a group of thinly veiled real ex-pat writers, like Ezra Pound. It focuses on Hilda Doolittle's alter ego - Julia - and her struggle with continuity and finding a path in a life altered by war. Fascinating, lyrical, depressing, and beautiful, this book is one that made quite an impact on me and is an eternal favorite. I owe this love entirely to Dr. Rita Ferrari who was also a devotee of H.D. and so enraptured by this novel that she photocopied her copy for all of us to read. This is how amazing a book it really is, loves.

The detailing of locations, climate, and political systems made the story a little hard to get into at first. However, it is through this meticulousness that Le Guin immerses the reader in a world that is both "alien" and understandable, and provokes many "what if" questions about our own planet and culture. Most prominently, what if gender was largely nonexistent? But also - what if humans had never domesticated other mammals? What if time and progress were perceived differently, and every year was a new Year One? The story that forms as these questions are explored is fascinating, and touches on the links between many dualities: pride and love, service and betrayal, alienation and acceptance. Le Guin writes with precision and beauty. This quote is my favorite (among many that are worthy of being re-read): “A profound love between two people involves, after all, the power and chance of doing profound hurt."
great way to end the series

I really enjoyed this book, especially after my last one. I found myself laughing out loud after almost every page. I loved the way it was written and really couldn't put it down. I only wished it had a better ending. The way it ended made me feel like the last couple of pages were ripped out.

Although a nice introduction, a very, very neoliberal case study. No thought is given to the validity of the assumptions made while formulating within a free market mode of production.
