This book gave new meaning to the word "gripping." I'll preface this by saying it's the first book I read on an e-reader; I just bought a nook. I'd already heard raves about Marianne Leone's moving tribute to her late son Jesse Cooper, what it's like to raise a child with cerebral palsy, and her efforts to advocate for his education in the public schools. I'd also heard she was a lovely writer. I looked at some free sample pages to try out my new nook, and I immediately bought the book. I couldn't put it down. I read late into the night. In the morning, I had what I believe is nook carpal tunnel syndrome from gripping the device. I'm serious. This memoir is one you want to hold close and not put down. It also makes you want to not let go of your children or other loved ones. Without sentimentality, Leone writes a compelling portrait of her son's first eighteen years, before his death from an apparent seizure. I came away feeling I knew this family, as well as their extended family of caregivers, and had a new understanding of people with physical disabilities and the fierce work their families do to advocate for their children. And the writing is gorgeous. This is by no means a typical memoir of parenting or of grief. It left me breathless. Recommend!

When another guest turns up dead, Aphra begins looking into things. I enjoyed this light weight mystery for the caribbeanness of it and also the frienship she begins with one of the young guests.

My least favorite book. There is something about shallow cartoony characters behaving unrealisticly in every scene to promote a selfish and uncaring philosphy that makes me sick to my stomach. I would rather read about Humanism then Jerkism. The prose is good, the talk about architecture is good. But you can get both in better packages. Where to put this book when you are done with it: next to the toilet

I finished this book within 24 hours. Though it's a short read. Very tempting, I couldn't get through a night without the book. I was very glad that a book without supernatural beings can get me that excited. Apparently it's a wonderful book. I LOVED IT.

A cute story about a dinosaur who wants to be a ballerina. The best part of this story are the fellow ballarina comments and the instructor's way of talking to the dinosaur and her pupils. For example, "And how in the world will a male dancer ever lift you over his head?" A very cute and funny tale about how even the most impossible dreams can come true.

Post-apocalypse (again, one of my favorite genres of fiction: man vs. nature, man removed from society, man as animal) story of a father and his son. I read this book in 4 hours. It is exceptional. At moments horrifying, frightening, incredibly sad, and overall, a remarkable homage to humanity's desperate search for goodness and meaning.

3 1/2 stars In this book we return to Cedar Cove and pick up where 8 Sandpiper Way and A Cedar Cove Christmas left off. Sheriff Troy Davis is lamenting the fact he let his first love go for the second time. Faith Beckwith may still love Troy, but he let her go and she has no intention of giving him another chance. This is supposed to be a story about Faith and Troy, but it seems that all the other characters from Cedar Cove take over the story. Olivia, Grace, and Charlotte of course play a part in things (what is Cedar Cove without them?). Then there is Christie, Teri Polgar's sister, and her somewhat relationship with James Wilbur. Oh, and of course Teri and Bobby. Then there are Bruce and Rachel, newly married and dealing with his daughter, Jolene. Mack and Mary Jo have a HUGE storyline and setup the next book (1022 Evergreen). It seemed to me that this book was more about the next book than this one itself. I almost got lost with all the storylines and there was very little resolution. Usual for the "continuing saga of Cedar Cove," but this seemed excessive. I also found that Macomber seemed to peddle her A Cedar Cove Cookbook a bit in the book. It was repeatedly mentioned that Charlotte gathered recipes for Justine's new tea room. Plus, when she bakes something, it almost felt like a recipe. Did it really help the plot to know that Charlotte knitted for 45 minutes while waiting for something in the oven? I didn't feel that it did. Overall, this was a bit of a disappointment. Troy and Faith barely had a story here and the ones that were front and center were left hanging. So, here's to waiting for the next book in the series...
