Just won this on Goodreads First Reads. I used to live in Utah and Carole Mikita has been a news anchor there for many years. This looks like a very inspirational book and I look forward to reading it. This is a powerful personal story of a man who has overcome tremendous physical challenges to make a positive contribution to the world. His positive attitude, humor, compassion and determination, as well as his deep love for his mother and family, are present on every page. What a tremendous tribute this book pays to his angel mother who devoted herself to him with such unconditional love. Her words of encouragement, "God has not brought you this far to fail" show such faith. In spite of doctors' predictions to the contrary, he did not just survive, but he thrived! The book also talks about how he developed a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and his testimony. The life he lives proves that a person does not have to be able to stand or walk to make a difference to the world and make a positive contribution to those around them. I especially enjoyed the chapter about Steve needing to be independent and go to college on his own. It warmed my heart to know that complete strangers would step up to help him achieve his goal. Very inspiring!

this book was pretty good. it started out really good although it had a few slow parts. i wish the author would have described the society a bit more as i love dystopia novels but this story is about a world where everyone stops ageing and i think its a good subject and decent writing and i will read more of her work for sure!

Fascinating and Darkly Brilliant Collection from a Master Story Teller Thersa Matsuura’s: ‘A Robe of Feathers – And Other Stories’ is undoubtedly the most insightful, thought provoking and realistically frightening books I have ever read. When the fusion of Japanese folklore, superstitions and supernatural phenomena combine, I was immediately drawn into each of the seventeen superbly crafted stories. Each story features the Youkai (bewitching apparition) and is brought to life by the author. ‘A Robe of Feathers’ has indeed a long lasting affect which will stay with you long after the book is read. An intelligent, outstanding achievement that I recommend as a must read for all.
This book was wonderful! So honest and sweet and very well written. Kelly's humor makes reading about hard real life events bearable. And memorable. A must read!

For me, this was a book club read selected by an avid reader (and English MA) whose opinion I trust. It took a while for me to get into it (because I'd forgotten that there is a sort of "novel-within-the-novel" going on). Once I did, I really enjoyed it. It is essentially the very complex story of two sisters whose family rises and falls during the WWI, Great Depression and WWII eras. It is an ambitious work and, like I said, it took a while for me to keep the characters and chronology in order and there are plenty of twists and turns throughout. I found myself pitying, identifying with, hating, and caring for the main character, Iris, which kept things interesting. In short, it is a tricky familial game of hide-and-seek.

My Thoughts: I am completely and totally in love with A Discovery of Witches. It's not perfect. It's not totally unique. But, it is engrossing and exciting and can make you forget any problems you might of had with it. This was a novel that a friend put me on to. She raved about it and spent a lot of spare moments squeezing in as much time as possible to read. As I saw it on the news a few times when it was released, I immediately dismissed it as being too mainstream for myself, just another Stephen King or Anne Rice who always miss the mark for me. Oh to bathe in the glorious stream of assumption. This novel is huge and I knocked it over in a matter of days. To get away from the raving a bit, there were two things I didn't like. First was the lack of connection with Diana in the beginning. She seemed a little confused, a little in love and a little inquisitive but not a whole lot of anything. So when she finally stood up for herself and let her feelings out, I breathed a sigh of relief. Now, the other thing, which honestly didn't annoy me until near the end, was Matthew's need to keep everything to himself. The guy has trust issues, and while being head-over-heels in love, he still never gave his all. His complex and mysterious nature pegs him as a sure favourite with fans though. Deborah must of put a lot of research into this as the twisted web she laid before us became more twisted as more answers were revealed. It has a sense of being a true story even though it's blatantly fantasy. A perfect mixture between the world we know and a secret one that could be there but we'd never know unless we looked hard enough. As for the end, it finished in a good place and couldn't of gone on longer without being another 600 pages. I loved the little twist which took me a few reads to get my head around and made it all the more lovable for it. Final Opinion: I'm not one to love reading humongous books as I find I get bored and want to switch it up a bit. Not the case here. After the first couple hundred pages, I realised that I didn't want it to end and even when it did I would not be satisfied with it's length. I'm not ashamed to say it's the Twilight for the adult reader (though hopefully they won't destroy it on film the same way). It's also got a little of The Da Vinci Code mixed in. Please don't write it off though if you didn't like both of those, as while it has has some bad reviews, it's the sort of book you'll either love or hate. And if you do love it, you'll be thanking yourself for years to come. First Lines: The leather-bound volume was nothing remarkable. To an ordinary historian, it would have looked no different from hundreds of other manuscripts in Oxford's Bodleian Library, ancient and worn. But I knew there was something odd about it from the moment I collected it. Favourite Quote: "How could you not have been loved before, when I love you so much?" The Raw Shark Texts is like a step up from your average beach book. I found it kind of silly, but it was a very fun read and I am still trying to figure out what the hell it was all about- it's very symbolic. This book is a thirty year old man.

What an artistic book that can not only make one listen, but furthermore captivates all the senses! Notwithstanding the excellent storyline and interesting points made, I think my favorite part about this book was the amazing and dreamlike pictures Mr. Fitzgerald painted in my mind as I read.
