An incredibly detailed and well-researched, well-documented book on Vlad Tsepes. Truth be told, it had me at "appendices with translations of historical documents" - including letters and deeds written by Tsepes. Excellent reference work of DOOOOOOM!

This novel does not have anything to do with the Benjamin Button movie, but it is about a man who ages backwards. It takes place in early 20th century San Francisco. Central to the story is Max's love for the woman who becomes his wife but can never really know him.

Couldn't put it down. Was amazed at how this story managed to be everything: disturbing beyond belief, heart-wrenching, and even funny at times.

Having recently read Auster's Brooklyn Follies and enjoyed it quite a bit, i stole Travels in the Scriptorium: A Novel from Bryan's bookshelf to read on the two-hour train from NYC to Baltimore. I didn't like it. At first, i was captivated by the post-modern "what's going on here"-ness of the narrative. However, once i started to pick up on enough clues, it wasn't as captivating. The last pages of the book were heavy-handed - a criticism that i have seen launched against Auster on a number of occasions which i hadn't agreed with over Brooklyn Follies. I didn't find the insight particularly engaging or the "surprising twist" particularly exciting.

The narrator in this story is a dog who hopes to be reincarnated as a man. I found the idea interesting, so I picked it up to read. I really liked the insights into man that this dog had.

It was OK, not great. I was a littled embarrassed though because I took this book down to Daytona with me, and I was always approached by people who were all raving about the book, and I felt bad because my "I think it's OK so far"s just weren't measuring up. Honestly, I think it's an important book just for the fact that it's about one person's recollections of/experiences in Afghanistan during a time when people really want to know about the country and its history, but I have to say that I found the plot a bit contrived. After saying that though, I appreciate the fact that the author was simply trying to tell the story of one character's experience rather than trying to write "a story about Afghanistan."
A fantasy book by Card, which I found interesting at first but lost interest as the story went on. I think I'll stick to his science fiction books.

Parisian self-styled intellectual Antoine realizes his lifestyle is making him miserable, and decides to try anything that will make him better able to endure the tedium that is life. Abandoning his assortment of chicly weird friends, he tries alcoholism (a half-litre of beer lands him in ER), a career as a bonds-trader (he's a wild success), etc. Eventually, natch, he realizes his happiest state is when he allows himself just to be himself. I chuckled a lot in the first 30 pages or so, less often thereafter. There are some good lines: "My life would improve if I were stupid." "That's stupid." "I'm on the right track, then. . . ." (p73) Overall, though, I was very disappointed; an excellent premise seemed very poorly exploited.
