Though I consistently adore Cornelia Funke, this book really was not enjoyable for me. Unlike many of her other books, this story doesn't introduce any magic until the last 1/4 of the book. I wish she had chosen to incorporate it in the entire story or not at all. But don't judge this author by this one book or review; Cornelia Funke is a favorite!

Loved this book. Well-written and intriguing. Excellent character study, much empathy created. Great picture of the horrifying, destructive, and very progressive nature of sin. Creepy. Would that we all could have a separate repository for our poor choices, misdeeds, our wickedness. Alas, there is none...but praise be to God! He alone has provided a way for our complete redemption in Jesus Christ. Though Wilde clearly delineates between right and wrong, good and bad, light and darkness, that specific Good News is not part of this story. All the same, a great read...what an incredibly unique and creative idea for a novel. ...I wonder if the idea came to him before or after his time spent in jail for his own debauched lifestyle...

A charming little book about an amazing case of 16th century identity theft. The author really manages to bring her peasant subjects to life. I could picture them and their village life much more vividly than in many nonfiction history books (and even some fiction). I'm not sure if this is due to the soap opera-like plot or the actual writing, but either way it's a great read. Davis wrote this after working on the movie adaption of the case. It is certainly a tale made for the movies. All the compelling characters, strange coincidences and surprise twists are ready to go in the historical record. But the author sometimes seems to assume that her readers are already familiar with the story through the movie, which rubbed me the wrong way for some reason.

Blimey, what was all that about. Very Vague. V. plays out like Ornette Colman's(McSphere's) saxophone lines: trickling out, without tonal centre. Occasional lucid clusters of sense and structure lay immersed in cacophonous chunks of word-drizzle. Strange and possible misogynistic undercurrents bubble up intermittently within 50s beatnik America where characters ruminate on stuff. Sojourns to S. Africa, Germany, Italy and Malta in the quest to find V. Mostly tedious and hard work but glad i read it.

Dense, detailed, upsetting and beautiful. a cultural microscope slide. it troubled me, and i will not forget it easily.
This is one of the first books I remember my teacher reading to my class when I was in school and I just absolutley loved every bit of it. I re-read it for my book review and I still find it brilliant. I even went out and bought more books by Roald Dahl. I love how he is so creative in his work and the characters that he makes up are just brilliant. I would really reccommend this book as it is very creative and children would just love it.
