This was well written, but ultimately somewhat ridiculous. It made me laugh afterwards, thinking about the absurdity of it - but while I was reading it, I did feel compelled to read on. It also brought up some interesting questions about the differences between animal and human.

Shipwrecked, Saint-Germain is washed ashore in northern Germany in the Dark Ages and finds himself the hostage and under the protection of Ranegonde, a crippled woman tryng to hold her lands together and under her control in a time and place where women have no such rights; her brother, in whose name she holds the house and lands, is a monk at a nearby monastery. He has little interest in maintaining the family possessions, and so it falls to Ranegonde to do so. The money she hopes to receive in exchange for Saint-Germain will make that job easier. What she doesn't count on is the respect and admiration Saint-Germain develops for an intelligent woman doing the best she can under difficult circumstances. This book does a lot to explain how people lived during the Dark Ages in Europe. What it can't do is make a time of dreary desperation seem exciting and romantic.

This book was awesome! Who knew lobsters were so interesting? Told from both the fishermen and scientist perspectives.
true story about Chicago World's fair 1893
This is a very engaging read about the Farallone Islands just off the coast of San Francisco which contains one of the largest populations of Great White sharks in the world. Not only is the shark stuff terrifying and incredibly interesting, so is the account of the author's adventure on the islands with the rouge research crew and all of the gazillion birds that live amongst the craggly rocks. Fantastic book.

My cousin found me a copy of this and I got so involved in reading it. I loved reading from Edward's point of view especially since he can hear the thoughts of others and it gives us more of a picture of his family. It's too bad that it's only a partial draft and it left off just as the story was getting good. Only annoying thing became the repetition of dialogue from Twilight. Obviously, it needs to be there, but its a bit annoying to read again.

I loved this book! It gave me things to think about. It entertained me. It moved me. (hehehe) It had a romance and was still clean. I had to go look up the poem it kept talking about. I will certainly not forget it now. The book makes me want to tie a Rambo-ish bandana around my head and go out and fight the world and make a better life. Da-da-da-dun-da-da! Charge! Sigh... now I will go eat another piece of Dove chocolate and give my children one more kiss goodnight. I really liked this book. You should read it.

This was an easy-to-read captivating tell-all. Not sure if it's 100% accurate or if it's a memoir written in the James Frey style as there are a few instances of fact conflicts and contradictions within its pages (which also happens frequently in The Bible and many people still believe it's literal, so who am I to decide?). I suggested to Oprah on Twitter that this may be a great book club read as it is the classic Cinderella story that ends with the happy ending and an empowered woman on top (pun possibly intended. My favorite quote in this entire book has to be when Jenna feels she isn't as blessed as other women in the industry so has to use her one organ that is bigger than theirs -- her brain. I had no idea breasts were considered an organ until this educational read and now fully support the notion of becoming an organ donor. Anyone need some modest B's? If anything this was a who's who in the industry which I am not as familiar with as some so most names meant nothing to me. A great beach read that could spark conversation with those around you.
Consider the Twinkie... A popular food item, first introduced to the public in the 1930's, which now represents a vast example of how ingredients have changed over the years to meet consumer demand. Honestly, I'd never really thought about it before... that long list of hard-to-pronounce chemicals on the packages of my snack cakes never bothered me. But reading this book not only opened my eyes to what, exactly goes into this innocent-seeming treat, but also how incredibly complex and vast and intricate the entire food industry in America IS. It's shocking to find out how much of our food additives come from products that were once thought to be useless by-products of steel manufacturing. And oil. SO much stuff comes from oil!! Food stuff, concrete, plastic (of course), stuff that goes into our shampoo and soap and toothpaste... it's amazing to discover the origins of all of these things, the intricate web of relationships between manufacturing and food products. I know people who won't eat Twinkies because "they're made from nothing but chemicals" but honestly, MOST of the food we buy and eat contain quite a few of these same chemicals... it just goes to show that many consumers don't REALLY know what they're eating anymore. I mean, if something you wanted to eat had an ingredients list like this: hydrogen oxide, cellulose, hemicellulose, malic acid, dexrose, fructose, pectin, sucrose, amylacetate, and citric acid... would you eat it? No? Not natural enough for you? Not healthy? Do you realize the above is the ingredients list for an apple? Anyway, the point of this book was certainly not to tell everyone that Twinkies are just as healthy and natural as apples; it's true purpose was simply to explore WHERE these chemicals that are contained in most food items on our shelves today come from, how they are made, and what it means in terms of the advancement of making better, tastier foods with longer shelf lives. It's astounding how much goes into something as innocuous-seeming as a Twinkie. I'm glad I read this book; it was well-written and informative and even funny at times. I'd love to see it made into a Discovery-Channel-like documentary.
