The last 50 pages of this book made reading through the beginning well worth it. Be sure to be in a quiet room with a box of tissues though - it is a weeper of a book. If you have ever experienced grief or loss, this book articulates these feelings in a way I have never read before. What drew me to the book was that it was subtitled "a memoir of friendship". The first part of the book develops the life of the women separately before they meet. The author also spends a lot of time discussing her struggles with alcoholism. I was disappointed that the book didn't spend more time developing their friendship. Though the book was not what I thought it would be, I still recommend it to anybody who has ever experienced loss. There is also a lot in here about the bond they shared with their dogs so if you are a dog lover, this is also a wonderful book.

This is the third time I've read all the stories in this book, and I am still amazed at how unsettling they all are. Props to Roald Dahl.

I thought all 9 volumes were well worth reading.

The only Dicken's book I've been able to make it through. Unlike some of his other works, this isn't any longer than it needs to be. And it's a great story!

The Debut novel, “Shadowed Summer,” of author Saundra Mitchell is a work that is short and brief. The story is about a young girl, Iris, and her friend Collette who spend their summer days messing around with magic and spells in the nearby graveyard. The story takes place in the hot humid days of the country side town of Ondine, Louisiana, a small hobonk town where the most excitement anyone sees is the kids blowing up river bend. The characters are filled with boredom of small town life and that is translated well onto the pages of Mitchell’s book. The heat and the humidity of Iris’ summer adventure sizzles out of the pages into a story set in the deep hot summer south. Mitchell delivers a novel of a girl who is haunted by a ghost name Elijah. Elijah is frustrated since no one has been able to find his body after he went missing that one fateful day. Through much speculation, interrogation and clue seeking Iris and Collette, with the help of Collette’s boyfriend Ben, are able to solve the mystery step by step. The emotional frustration is apparent in Elijah’s haunting episodes.Though at times slow or winding the story still seemed to progress nicely. Between Elijah and his appearances the story took on a life of its own. I found the characters to be lacking depth and at times a little bored(boring?). Well, I suppose in the small town they lived in they would be. The most fascinating character was Elijah, who was creepy and mysterious giving the story some oomph. Elijah’s creepiness oozed out of the pages and his haunting occurrences were the most successful aspect of the novel. Although the story was not boring, it kept me going, I was still wanting more and felt a few extra pages and character building might have done the book good. Overall the book was an OK debut novel with spurts of excellent. I give this book a 73/100 C- Characters- 14 Plot- 15 Writing- 16 Originality- 16 Re-Readability- 12

This has been my "fall asleep" book for about a week. While it could have been easily devoured in a single sitting - I am glad that I was able to enjoy it over many nights. A twist on the "Jungle Book" a young boy is raised by the inhabitants of an English graveyard. The chapters tell the adventures of Nobody "Bod" Owens as he grows from a toddler until his teens. Each chapter stands alone as a short story, but they weave together well to tell the story of Bods first 15 years. It was a great read for both adults and older children alike.

** spoiler alert ** Lots of action and fighting. Interesting plot and characters. Alanna disguises herself as a boy, and trades places with her twin Thom to become a knight. At the palace, she makes an enemy, Ralon. Her friend George, the King of Theives, and her mentor Coram teach her about fighting, and Squire Ralon leaves court. Doing this, Alanna makes friends with some of the older pages, Gary, Raoul, Alex, Francis, and Prince Jonathan. She also befriends a knight named Myles. The Sweating Sickness spreads through the city, and Alanna had to use her dreaded Healing Gift to save the prince's life. Then, Duke ROgers, a powerful sorcerer and Jon's cousin comes to the palace, and he and Alanna, or "Alan" dislike each other immediately. She, a page, goes on a trip with her squire friends to Persopolis, and Duke Roger warns them about the nearby Black City, and the Ysandir. He enchants them, and so Jon and Alanna go into the Black City and eventually defeat the Ysandir, but in the process he finds out her true identity. He doesn't care, and keeps it a secret when they go back.
A light, entertaining read.
This is a short and somewhat light read with opportunity to delve deeper into thoughts on bullshit and what metaphysial beliefs the bullshitter may hold. Frankfurt gets into a more interesting discussion towards the end of the book, but leaves it at merely a light discussion. He mentions some of the ideas of Wittgenstein and references Saint Augustine's essay on lies, which, thanks to this book,I'm now interested in reading. The book is at times quite funny and definitely interesting, for a one to two day read. Frankfurt sometimes uses unnecessary words, but this may be intentional given the subject matter. However, his language becomes more understandable and approachable as one continues reading. The only disappointment I have is that while at the beginning of the book, Frankfurt alludes to the idea that bullshit may hold some value in society, he does not offer any further thought or discussion on this throughout the remainder of the book.
真棒阅读! 读者,如果还没有捡起来,那就捡起来吧! 杰克·里彻,是一种现象,你不想错过。 而且,对于他来说,当它尽可能地个人化时,注定会是一次迷人的旅程。
