3.5/5 Is it me or did this book feel incredibly messy with its plot and world-building? Going back and forth in timeline didn't help either. Overall I can see the merit, and why this author is liked so much, but I wasn't entirely sold on him. The narrator though, was amazing! And I absolutely loved Glokta! What a fabulous character...

Worth reading in conjunction with Instructions for British Servicemen in Germany, and laid out similarly. However, obviously, in this case to instruct the troops on how to act in the country of a liberated ally, rather than an occupied enemy. An interesting contrast.

I received this book as an electronic galley from publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was pleasantly surprised by this book, not having read Diane Chamberlain until now. The book's pacing was excellent and the story was intriguing. It makes you wonder how well you really know someone. After their friend Noelle's suicide, Tara and Emerson try to piece together why should would ever take her own life. Throughout this time, they discover shocking and disturbing truths about their friend, who was a midwife. These secrets impact the lives and families of each of these women. It was hard to put this book down. Diane Chamberlain does a great job of creating an original and compelling story that keeps you turning pages and keeps you guessing. Well done. I was sucked into this book right from the very beginning. The characters were interesting and I even sympathized with Noelle in a way, even though many of her actions were unforgivable. She had so many secrets and it was fascinating to watch while her friends discovered more and more things about her, and how they reacted to those secrets as they came to light.

It's been a while since I read this book, but I remember really liking it a lot. Astrid's character undergoes so many transformations as an adolescent shuffled from one foster home to the next, the result of her mother's incarceration. What makes it so interesting is her initially worshipful relationship with her mother. She is not some kid who has never known a real home, never had a close bond with her mother. She is a kid that had no idea what her mother was really like until she encountered a slew of other "mothers" the foster care system had to offer. I happened to really appreciate the film adaptation of this novel as well, though it did of course omit some of Astrid's less desirable experiences, some of which were crucial to her character's development. It is an engrossing story that reads fast but lingers.

I was disappointed with this one. An interesting thought experiment for a sci-fi book but the plot and characters were not that interesting.
Simply the best fiction ever written.
