Well researched into the history of the Nanking Massacre, Mo spins a tale around the history and guilt of the past. Very enjoyable and somewhat gory in it's descriptions.

I haven't read this in years, but I was given it as a kid and loved it, and read it numerous times. (I even still own it.) There was just something about it I related to.

An absolutely breath-taking portrayal of what it is to live under a totalitarian government - wish I had read it when I was studying Stalin's USSR. A Tolstoy for the C20th (not, to be fair, that I have read any Tolstoy.. ;))

Very slow to start, but I was hooked once Charlotte and her family showed up.

I liked the steampunk aspect and the worldbuilding. I didn't like the general sappiness (I admit my level of tolerance is low), the fact that it was 510 PDF-pages -> the story would have been better if shorter and tigher written, the lack of flaws in both MC and their recurrent chick-with-dick behaviour, the simplistic plot.

rather interesting....although, I couldn't relate to some of the name-dropping since it was British esoteric literary people for the most part. But still, it was intriguing to read about their private life, nuance of relationship and how they communicate...that's what I read biography for!

I tired to read this book for a second time and again I couldn't make it past the first 10 pages. Leonard Cohen is one of my top 5 favorite music list, but I don't like his prose at all. All of the literature in the James Joyce style of "steam of consciousness" or whatever you call it... when the text tries to confuse you... no, it doesn't cut it with me. Though I can't say Cohen's text in this book was incoherent... you just get the feeling immediately that it's more about the writer than about telling a story the reader will be enriched by.

I really enjoyed Stargirl,a teen/young adult novel about fitting in/not fitting in during high school. Leo is not necessarily all about fitting in himself, but he has his friends, his niche and he knows what's considered "normal" at his high school. Then Stargirl appears, 100% her own person; she carries a pet rat around, gives people cards for various reasons, sings "Happy Birthday" to those celebrating, and plays her ukele in the cafeteria once she's finished her lunch. She also dresses much differently than the other girls. At first, she's just an enigma, then she gets a turn at being a cheerleader and being popular, and then sinks to below the student body's general acknowledgement. In the middle of all this, Leo and Stargirl begin a relationship. Can the relationship stand the strain of one person being a truly unusual person? I wish for every teen just a little bit of the strength of character to be truly themselves in the world of high school where everyone seems to want you to conform.

1926. A Scotland Yard Edition. Originally titled "The Joker". Meticulously plotted mystery of the mostly harmless, humourous type. A smart criminal gets away, seemingly having hurt no one and well-liked by all his alleged victims. I love the way so many of these old mysteries I read have no really bad people in them. It's as if the world was a much better place back then. I suppose realistic fiction would have been censored as too vile? I am unable to believe that human nature was less awful then than it is now, which is what much of my reading might otherwise lead me to think.
This is the 2nd in the series. It was supposed to be a series that I read with my son but unless a book is on audio then he just isn't that interested right now. I like where this author is heading in this story and was even surprised at the end. Definetly going to keep going on this series.
