Superb historical novel set in the 13th century (I don't remember exactly) during the construction of the Santa Maria del mar cathedral currently in the neighbourhood of La Ribera in Barcelona. Many compare the book to Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth (which I have on the shelf, but nor read yet). It is simply well written, full of historical detail. One criticism is perhaps the "catalan pride" content, which at times is a little too explicit. Nevertheless, the novel IS set in Catalunya and it does shed some light on aspects of Catalan culture of which I was not yet aware.

One of my favourite Coupland Books - I was originally put off by the 'high school massacre' storyline at the beginning, however soon found that the characters were so well developed and original, and genuine, that it was very memorable. Towards the end the writing is particularly insightful and touching.

"Darkness Becomes Her" is a unique and thrilling surprise. In some respects it reminds me of "The Percy Jackson" series but with a female protagonist and antagonist. It is rare to find such a successful blend of old myths and new world situations. Ari is a 17 year old girl who has been living in foster care. Upon looking into her mother's past at a mental health facility, she discovers unimaginable truths about her background only leading her to ask more questions. She goes on a quest to find out more about her mother and father in New Orleans whose name have been changed to New 2 after devastating storms just 13 years prior. Upon arrival, Ari realizes that her stark white hair and teal eyes do not make her the only unique person around because New 2 is harboring its'own unique people. This story is absolutely fantastic! However, I must warn that if you are considering it for your young adult it does contain quite a bit of profanity and references to rape. I am a high school teacher and will probably hesitate loaning this book out to various students because of it. I sometime wish that books had a rating system such as music, video games etc. so that parents can more accurately decide what to buy for their children. The decision to allow young adults to read such materials should always rest in the hands of the parents. However, for you adults out there reading this review, I highly recommend you read this first installment of the series. It is definitely worth it.

“Gone” is a novel that was inspired by a heartbreaking period in the author’s life, but in itself, it is not a sad book. In fact, it’s an inspiring and hopeful read. Charley Woods is the mother of Jenny, who was left with severe brain damage at the age of two. When we first meet Charley, it is fifteen years after this devastating event, and Charley is a wreck. She is wracked by guilt, she comfort eats and generally leads a stressful life. She visits the shell that is her teenage daughter and we are told that “she hated every visit”. Then one day, Charley has a heart attack and finds herself….where? From this point, we embark, with Charley on a voyage of discovery. Is she going mad, or is the world in which she finds herself real? How can the lovely young woman that she meets be her daughter? Charley asks herself many questions throughout the book and the author uses these questions and challenges to explore the concepts of hope, forgiveness and living without fear. I suppose that in many ways, “Gone” could be called a fairy tale for adults. There are some wonderful scenes and characters that Charley meets on her quest. I particularly enjoyed the episodes with the talking flower, Penelope, and also enjoyed the characters, Brogan and Chamber. Charley’s quest in the Orb of Caprice is gripping and exciting, as she strives to reach her goal. This is a book that works on several levels and will stay with me for a long time.
What a frustrating character!! Her "reasoning" is just unbelievable... but what's most surprising is that there are truly people in this world that function like her! Was pretty funny though, and a quick read.

This is the second Jack Reacher novel I've read, and like the first one, not great literature, but a good read. Jack Reacher is an ex-military cop. He doesn't have a permanent address, and travels with a passport, a bank card, and .. that's about it. He doesn't like seeing people being treated unfairly or living in fear. And he likes even less retracing his steps. So when he's tossed out of Despair, Colorado on a trumped-up vagrancy charge, he sees red, and is determined to find out what's really going on there. Even after the authorities try, several times, to rough him up and get him out of their hair, he keeps going back. Eventually, he discovers several things are going on in Despair, most of which have to do with the war in Iraq in some way. With some politics and some conspiracy theories thrown in, this was a good story.
Although this book is complete fiction, it was a good page turner while I was flat on my back due to an injury.
