This is so good, I'm holding off on reading the last story because I don't want it to be over.

Light hearted and easy reading (although I used the CD talking book), finished it in a day or so of gardening. As the jacket states "neither gruesome nor sad" but is lightly educational although I would have preferred more on the educational side

A fun piece of historical fiction. It would be sad if the heroine and her grandpa weren't so feisty and creative. They are about to lose their homes in the creation of the Smoky Mountain National Park, but their interactions with outsiders make the story amusing. The local color, colloquialisms, and superstitions all added to my enjoyment. What's funny is the first few pages weren't working for me. I considered not even finishing, so now I'm happy I stuck with it.

Reading Swedish crime fiction makes me wonder: is Sweden really so full of murder and evilness? Or do the dark, cold winter days and nights encourage sinister novels focused on the dark area of the human psyche? Sun Storm, winner of Sweden’s Best First Crime Novel Award, deals with religion, hypocrisy, abuse, mental illness, and perhaps redemption over the course of the story. It’s setting of Kiruna, the northernmost city in Sweden, is important. Its remoteness and isolation are integral to the story. The story starts off when charismatic religious figure Viktor Strandgard is brutally murdered in the revivalist church he created, The Source of All Our Strength. Rebecca Martinsson returns to Kiruna, her hometown, to support Viktor’s sister. The reader slowly learns Rebecca’s past as she unravels the truth and protects Sanna’s children from multiple forms of evil. Pregnant inspector Anna-Maria, her counterpart Sven-Erik, and a blow-hard Assistant Chief Prosecutor round out the cast. Fans of Henning Mankell or Stieg Larsson’s The Millennium Trilogy will appreciate Sun Storm.

A lot of people say Isherwood was the best writer of his generation. They leave out the part about his being a mystic nut-job. Worn out on Christian dualism and the War (not everyone thought it was a moral War), he expatriated to Santa Monica to write movie scripts and started talking to a previously normal friend who had fallen in with some Swami. This is so unpretentiously, beautifully written. Here is a random paragraph: This kind of playing at meditation filled me with an excitement which I have seldom felt since. It was most exciting to sit on teh floor in a corner of the room, in the darkness of early morning or evening, and feel that one was face to face with the unconscious--made exciting, like all flirtations, by the eventual possibility of "doing something about it."

Over a year ago I picked this book up at an airport and after muddling through the first half, much more intriguing books drew me away. I would periodically pick this book back up in attempts to finish, make it through a chapter, and remember why I set it down in the first place. Finally I pick this book back up with 4 chapters left, and could not put it down. I have a faint memory of why I did not like this book to start with, but the last few chapters were brilliant. This book probably would have earned more stars if I would have stuck through it in one time period.

Excellent. I read it in 2 sittings. Drop what you're doing and read it right now. I had to restrain myself from immediately starting at the beginning again once I finished. It reminded me a lot of José Saramago's Blindness, another amazing story of human reactions in the face of disaster. Read that one too. But make sure you read some VC Andrews or Charlaine Harris in between - that much devastation in a row might mess with your mind.

Shutter Island is a pretty pacy read with plenty of mysteries to keep your thoughts ticking over. I was ever so slightly annoyed with Lehane's tendency to constantly use "and" whenever there was some major action going off - but using the power of hindsight I could come up with a couple of reasons as to why he might do it. The characters were well-written, but not ones you could really connect to (even Chuck was a little bit awkward round the edges) and the ending was predictable, but didn't leave me feeling cheated in any way. I haven't seen the film, but I am pretty sure that it is going to be better than the book - the visual element may add a little bit extra to the action.

We had so much fun reading this book yesterday! Not only did we get to look at all the bright and colorful animals, but we also got to get up and move like them too! This is such a great book to get your children to explore different kinds of movements that your body can make, recognize colors and name animals! Grown-up tip: Even though your baby can’t read yet, you are promoting strong relationships, encouraging listening and language skills, promoting attention and curiosity, and establishing a strong reading foundation by reading aloud. The Children’s Reading Foundation recommends reading aloud together at least 20 minutes a day. So get creative and read a cereal box, a billboard sign, a magazine, or a favorite book!
