Looks like a cheesy review book but actually an incredibly concise catalogue of Bollywood films. The book is divided by decades and includes the films that made a significant cultural impact. There is a star system but notice that even the crappiest movies may have been enormously popular. The author explains the popularity of such movies in relation to Indian culture. He also explains the subtleties that would go unnoticed or curious to non-Indians, such as the portrayals of Catholics in films (Western and promiscuous, therefore let's put them in miniskirts!). Intelligent writing that recognizes the absurdity inherent in Bollywood films yet understands that that is its most compelling quality. Also dishes up the reviews with inside gossip and personal opinion, like the controversy of Lagaan being chosen as the Oscar contender instead of Gadar.

Interesting story, but the writing was such that I had to give it 2 stars. Still, the author makes a strong case for women being as competent as men in whatever realm they find themselves.

Very engaging, easy read. I read it in a few hours. Kind of improbable story line and a little far fetched, but interesting and a good story.

I think that the idea for this book is fantastic, but it was so hard to get into. An actual historian would very much enjoy this book, but I thought that it went on far too many tangents and gave history that wasn't necessary for the plot line. After finishing the book, I told my fiance, "I read for that many hours to get THAT ending? Are you serious?" A major "Eh..." for me.

Let me level with you: initially, this book weirded me out. I received it as a gift in the mail via Amazon after a dinner I’d spent with a colleague 30 years older than me. We’d consumed a bit of wine, and the conversation had shifted to the Now. Said colleague, I know, has enjoyed his fair share of mind-altering substances. I respect Huxley, and I'm sure the doors of perception, can, under such circumstances, open. I always figured, though, that what was brought back would be incomprehensible to me. My first impression was that Ram Dass had fried his brain in the ‘60s. However, I kept reading. Eventually, I grew to appreciate his message: be here now. In the end it was no more sinister than that --- and it was that same reminder presented in a few hundred pages with convenient illustrations for those orbiting the moon while reading. And after I dealt with the weirdness of the visuals, I got into it. Well worth reading.

the book is similar to the DaVinci Code - exploring alternative viewpoints/histories of the life of Christ. There are some really odd and formulaic ones out there, but this one was interesting and pretty sweet. There's more of a positive focus on his life rather than on age old conspiracies...

I loved this book I literally cried at how unfair it was. Even though it was a genre I usually wouldn't be into I really adored this book and am avidly looking forward to the next book dying a little bit to know if things will work out for the two. I really felt in touch with both characters and how unfair thier predicament was. I wanted so muc for both of them to be able to have their love. The imagry in the book was stunning and felt like I was right their with the characters shadowing just behind them as they moved through the story. I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the rest of the series.
