This book is geared mainly towards young stage actors. While not outwardly critical it's also not very complimentary towards film/tv and musical theatre, treating them as pesky but tolerable nuisance. That irked me a lot because I studied musical theatre but stayed in LA to go into the film industry. But whatever. If you're looking for a book about how to act, this isn't it. If you're looking for a book that will help you prepare for your career this is okay, but there are better ones out there. But if you want a book telling you what's out there and what to expect, than this is it. Most of what was in this book was not new to me. It would have been more fitting a read while I looked for schools, not after I graduated. It did introduce me to some actors and directors I hadn't heard of before, though. Something I can now investigate and learn more about. By the end of the book I was pretty bored. Brustein started off really strong, everything he talked about was followed by an example or story. After halfway through though it almost seemed like he was beginning to struggle. The stories he had peppered throughout the beginning became few and far between. All in all? Okay. Nothing new for me though. If Brustein wrote a book addressing the various techniques of different artists he's encountered, I woul be very interested.

At first I thought this was going to be another "Narnia-copycat", but I was pleasantly surprised to learn it was not that at all. This was a very moving tale and I greatly enjoyed. As I finished on the subway, I got all choked up!!! Good thing I dont cry easily ;)

Science strives ever onwards in search of the answers to the big questions. Is there a grand unifying theory (GUT) of everything, is the Higgs Boson the key to this theory etc. But day to day the questions that people want to know the answers to are things like 'why is the sky blue?' and 'does hot water freeze more quickly than cold water?'. And this is the book to find answers to lots of questions that you really want to know. The questions and answers all come from a column called 'The last word' in the New Scientist magazine, and this book is a follow up to an earlier book in a very similar vein. Interesting and funny.
I fell in love with the narrator at word one and Flavia from the moment she first takes revenge on her older sister...much fun listening ensued. This is written for adults, but would be great for families (pre-teens and up.)
Great story about a small town on the Hudson River and discovering what's most important in life - people, their stories, and your relationships with them.
It was a fun and quick read.

50¢ at a book sale, and with my current love of Sherlockia, I couldn’t resist, even though I was pretty sure I would hate it. I didn’t hate it. It’s too well-intended to hate, too joyfully fannish, and I must admit that some of Meyer’s footnotes on this “found” manuscript made me laugh out loud. (In case you’re curious, it was the one where Watson writes, “I believe it was in Julius Caesar that Shakespeare said…*” and Meyer’s footnote is simply, “*It’s not.”) However, this fannishness was I guess also part of what I objected to: I mean, it’s published fanfic, people! And while, you know, not that there’s anything wrong with that…I guess on some level I do see something wrong with that. I can’t take it seriously. I kept wanting to comment on Meyer’s LJ: “Sherlock Holmes meeting Freud? What an awesomely cracktastic idea! LOL” Furthermore, it didn’t help that the mystery that pads out the book was just that…padding. And not particularly interesting padding, either. Some of Arthur Conon Doyle’s plots may have been a bit…silly, but they’re so atmospheric, so well done! ‘The Speckled Band’ is really creepy! So’s The Hound of the Baskervilles! The train chase in this was just…long. So, with modern copyright laws, will Harry Potter ever come into the public domain? ‘Cause man, then Harry’s going to be meeting a lot of people nuttier than Freud, that’s for sure.
