Rather obvious plot, average characters, and a fortune-telling, thieving stereotype of a "gypsy."

Excellent writing! I can't wait for the next one to be published.

Didn't like this story, it wasn't nearly as good as all the hype I'd heard about it. "The time is the 1950's, and the place is Canada's Atlantic coast at the edge of the great Newfoundland fishing banks. Sylvanus Now is a young fisherman of great charm and strength. His youthful desires are simple: he wants a suit to lure a girl - the fine boned beauty Adelaide - and he knows exactly how much fish he has to catch to pay for it. Adelaide, however, has other dreams. She longs to escape the sea, the fish, and the stultifying community, but her need of refuge from her own troubled family leads her to Sylvanus and life in the neighbouring outport. Set against the love story of Addie and Sylvanus is the sea, the Great Mother that is on the cusp of cataclysmic change. Caught between his desire to please his wife and his strongly independent nature, Sylvanus must decide what path his future will take."

This was a strange book. Jennifer Grant painted a very pleasing and perfect picture of her childhood and her relationship with her father. I have to admit I started reading it not realizing who Jennifer Grant was or who her mother was. I don't think she ever said/wrote the name of her mother! After I quickly finished the book I googled Jennifer Grant and was shocked to recognize her and her mother! The writing was crazy. And she would re-tell stories! What the heck? It was obvious she was educated and had some good thoughts. But sometimes I though she was down right rambling and preachy! I think the editors cared more about the Cary Grant brand than they did about the actual story she told. Where was her editor? I did like all of the pictures. Who doesn't like to look at the personal lives of celebrities? That is "the good stuff."

I read this for my college Shakespeare 2 class (wanted to skip all that I'd read for high school and run with the obscure); and later saw a live-action play version at the Intiman Theater in Seattle. They did a cowboy version with a little Asian gal as Cymbeline. Not my favorite, but I think everyone needs to go see a live-action Shakespeare play at least once (preferably one that doesn't suck as much).

There was much I liked about this book, but it was too harsh and gritty to really enjoy it.

To be completely honest, Aiden Hartley, although I envy his travels, is a pompous prick. he wanders around Africa pretending that it is his, and yet knows nothing of the people he lives "with." He hangs out with white people in white bars, and is essentially a whiny ex-pat child even though he was born in Kenya. And then Ex-pats (of every culture) wonder why everyone hates them; It's because of people like Aiden Hartley.

good, but a little long -
Obviously pretentious--obviously knows it, but still some great moments, I thought. I also read this in high school so my memory may be romanticizing it--but the character of the small brother is endearing. Same sort of character as in that book by J. Safran Foer.
