This was a great book that I was hesitant to read at first, because the premise sounds so depressing! But even though the story contains a whole lot of death and mayhem, while you're reading it it's still enjoyable because the story focuses on the people who actually survive. So instead of a tragedy what you get is a story about triumph over hardship. The characters are well thought out and the emerging politics after the collapse of society is very interesting to follow. I'm almost definitely going to continue with the series.

Least enjoyable and most difficult to read because it dealt with a serial killer of children. I still enjoy these characters and it had a nice romance which I love but it was an eerie disturbing story.

What did I learn from this book...never trust an Oprah pick as an indication of a great novel!

I read this book when I was 17 years old? 18? And five years later they are making the movie. Wait, THEY ARE MAKING THE MOVIE! Starring Lily Collins AND Sam Claflin!! I am writing this review from the world beyond.

This book got Atkinson a lot of attention and almost pigeon-holed her as a crime novelist!! I prefer her other works with their more lyrical prose and unexpected twists and turns. Her other works always have an element of mystery, so check those out too.

It took me several days after finishing this book to begin to appreciate it, but I am now glad I read it.

I remember hating this in highshcool, though today I appreciate Hemingway's terse prose. When I think of this book, however, all I can think of is the time our car broke down in south-western Iceland and we ended up in the living-room of a farm-house, listening to a defrocked priest read to us from "A Farewell to Arms," translating his Icelandic edition aloud into broken English for us. Remind me to tell you that story someday, because it was brilliant.

Short, sweet and sad..... I love epistolary novels, so I was predisposed to like this book. I wish it had been longer, though - and more fleshed out. But the author did manage to distill the essence and reality of this mother-daughter relationship in a very short book. I, too, was crying at the end.

I'm finally reading The Lord of the Rings! Finally! I've only been meaning to read the trilogy, well, gee, my entire life. Thank goodness the movies are so good and they didn't ruin the books for me. (Also thank goodness there are so many lovely men in it.) I still need to read the other two parts, but I really liked the first part. Gandalf is fantastic. Sam is wonderful. Bilbo's so sweet. There's not much else to say except that it's a great adventure with the best characters ever. Yay!
