Bawling my eyes out in public? Check. It doesn't matter if I found Tessa extremely annoying at times (come on, what normal sixteen year old isn't? let alone one battling cancer), this is still a good read. Lots of hope and despair and all those little things that you and I take for granted. What would your list look like?

Yaaay! Super-cheesy! The main characters actually aren't that interesting. The usual mix of the leading lady who gives her heart away too fast and the man who can't admit to himself what he's really like. Family troubles create urgency. They spend a little bit too much time being unhappy with each other for my liking. And of course, their sexual chemistry takes her breath away. "Perhaps it is not necessary, but it is my pleasure and my duty. It is dusk, madam. I cannot think of letting you walk alone after dark. Don't you know that wicked men roam these streets at night?" he asked with a wink. She had a sense of that, yes, and eyed him suspiciously. His soft chuckle made the hair on the back of her neck stand -- not from fright, she realized, but from the expectation of something pleasurable.
Decent. Well-written, but rather slow. Well developed characters. Reminds me of The Brothers K (which is possibly the best book ever written... aside from the first 100 pages)
All I need to say about this novel is that I wish I'd written it myself. I read it in one sitting and then re-read it to figure out how it works. The substance works, and then you want to figure out how Rachman makes it work.

I really enjoyed the book and its powerful portraits of different generations of women. I felt very ignorant having lived a parallel life and not really taking in properly the sufferings of Chinese people during the 1950s and 60s. The women were so admirable - it was humbling to read their lives.

I was really interested in this book at first, but then the first part was kind of repetitive and boring. Skipped over a bunch of it, actually, but the second part hooked me back in. I wish I had an urban tribe of my own.

My husband and I visited Montreal in August and visited the St Joseph's Oratory which is a impressive massive church on the side of Mount Royal. We had never heard of Brother Andre and spent some time visiting the church and beautiful surrounding gardens and had our picnic lunch there. We learned a little about Brother Andre who was a monk that spent his entire career welcoming visitors to the church and visiting the sick. He was know as a healer and we saw many left medical devices, canes on display. He was devoted to St. Joseph and was instrumental in getting the church built. We bought this book to find out about the humble monk and it is an inspiring story. A few weeks after we returned home, low and behold, the Catholic church proclaimed Brother Andre a Saint. If you visit Montreal don't miss this beautiful church and pick up a copy of this book to find out about the latest American Saint.
