i liked that it was set in berkeley, in elmwood, no less, my old stomping grounds. i liked the message about the absurdity and injustice of federal sentencing laws. i liked pretty much everything about it the first time i read it--but liked it less the second time, when i re-read it for a book club. probably the second time i was focusing less on the suspense of the story and more on the characters and their relationships (primarily the mother-daughter one), which upon closer inspection was sort of unbelievable and a bit overly dramatic, for my taste. i know the events were inherently dramatic, but still. anyway, a good read for a berkeleyan or a lawyer or someone interested in mother-daughter relationships.

I had never read Bowden before picking this up. I'm amazed at how complete his reporting is, and although some argue that he danced around the question of who actually fired the shot that killed Escobar, it doesn't hurt the telling at all. Fantastic

This read like a collection of short stories. Very smart, intertwined, great characters fully realized.

I will finish it, but this book gives me an immense sense of gratitude for the knowledge of simple truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the good sense God gave me to recognize complete hooey when I read it. There were parts that were touching, but overall I don't think I would recommend this book.

Obsession, identity, werewolves, trolls, Hollywood corruption, distorted fairytales, sex, irony, angels, illusions: such is the mix of Neil Gaiman. A master of scenarios, Gaiman is terrifically imaginative and evocative in the stories and poems of Smoke and Mirrors. Gaiman manages to integrate elements of fantasy into the real-life settings of dirty streets and motel rooms. Ninety-five percent of the time, he does this without being corny. In one story, a woman finds the Holy Grail in a thrift shop. In another, a young man casually runs into the former Angel of Vengeance in the streets of LA. But not every story uses myth of fantastical creatures-some thrive on subtle horror. In one of my favorite stories, a man travels on a less-than-ideal walking tour of the British Coastline and meets two fellows who, inside a drunken haze, may or may not exist. Gaiman also experiments with uncanny what-ifs: in one story, a man's venereal disease changes his identity against his will. He experiments with form and style, in one case writing in the dialect of an 11-year-old. He twists on traditional tales, as a sinister version of Snow White appears at the end. A couple pieces could have been omitted from this collection, simply because they were amateurish or reeked of bad metaphors. I' m also not sure how well fantasy and poetry merge together, as none of the poems in the collection particularly shined for me. But it's a collection I'll certainly turn to again in the future to experience its surreal and bizarre mood.

So many plays - so strange - some very hard to read, but it's a great collection to get a feel for what Beckett was doing with theatre as a medium. Now I'm on to the short prose.
Still working on it... I really disliked the beginning but now, 400 pages in, am sucked into a dangerous death spiral known as "reads books that are not located in the Sackler library".

OMG, this was HIliarious. I love Mo Willems, all of his books are a hit and funny. But this one takes the cake. Who knew a Mole Rat could be cute!
