I like Michael Caine and enjoyed his first autobiography. I found this book interesting but far more superficial and possibly redundant.

Everything he writes is worth reading. And thinking about, particularly if you are under 30.

Josephine Alibrandi is seventeen and in her final year at wealthy catholic school. This is the year her father comes back into her life, she falls in love, she discovers the family's secret and the year she sets herself free. I watch the movie too, it's good! You'll like it.

I really enjoyed this story. I love Kasey and Gram together and look forward to seeing more of them in Garrett and CJ's book. :)

This book covered a wide span of events and was thoroughly enjoyable. The exploration of the relationship between sisters was interesting after just finishing Picoult's "My Sister's Keeper" for book club--I continue to find family dynamic fascinating. During the recent 8th grade graduation from Eli's school, the address was based on the Prov. 18:24, "there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." The speaker went on to share God's perfect presence in our life throughout every trial and joy. In both thses books the sister's were each other's best friends, but also brought human failing to the relationship. Culturally, the book was fascinating and sad. The girls come to America from China, when all hope is lost for them in their home country. I am proud to be an American, but willing to admit we are a sinful country and salvation will not come from government, and we have made many mistakes and continue to make many mistakes. Last fall my pastor did a sermon series on politics. He spoke about immigration and asked questions from a biblical and ethical standpoint about whether or not we agree with immigration laws as believers in Christ. The earth is the Lord's and everything in it--why should we withhold a cup of cold water we can offer now. This is far more complex than I can understand in a book review, and my daughter just came down in curlers....

Love the new telling of the frog prince with a happy ending that doesn't seem sentimental, but fitting. Great for boys and girls.

I don't know what it was about After Dark that didn't gel with me, but I strongly suspect it was the writing style. It uses a present-tense narration from an inclusive plural 1st person POV - As the narrator says, "We" float around like an invisible camera. Beyond that, a lot of the language seems extremely clunky, fragmented, unprofessional. I don't know whether it was Murakami himself trying a new style, or translator Jay Rubin (but he's been just fine in the past), but to me, it just didn't work. There was no real conclusion to the "story" if you could call it that, no light shed on any of the mystery - even in Murakami's usual cryptic way - and really not much going on. The characters and their quirks, usual for Murakami, felt transparent and overwrought. All in all, it was a very unsatisfactory end to a long wait for Murakami's next work.
